My husband and I live in Atlanta, so Savannah makes a perfect last minute getaway. We got an excellent deal on the room with a AAA rate, and, through the generosity of the GM, we were upgraded to a River View King. A young lady named Ally checked us in (I hope I spelled that right.), and was more than helpful. She was truly delightful.
The room was nice. For an older hotel (built in 1985), it's well maintained. The furnishings were basic, but upscale. The bathroom was small, but nicely situated. I'll level with you. I'm a hotel snob. You won't catch me in a Holiday Inn. If that room had, in any way, been substandard, I would have busted them out. Big time. But I was surprised to find the room more than adequate. The bed was super comfortable. They weren't stingy with the pillows, the linens were soft, and overall, it was attractive. The room had an excellent view of the river, the convention center, and the Westin. A lot of the river view is industrial, which isn't asthetically pleasing, but it is interesting to watch the ships go by. The hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of Bay Street, minimizing the walk anywhere. Literally, you're two minutes from City Market, and a minute's walk from five good restaurants (I recommend the Chart House and Moon River Brewery.) You're centrally located between all the attractions and restaurants. The hotel provides access to River Street through a rear entrance, and busy Bay Street through the front entrance. This is pretty awesome, because the stairs from Bay Street to the River Street area are very steep, and slippery when it rains. Being able to cut through the hotel was awesome. We valet parked the car and didn't see it until we checked out, two days later. We walked everywhere, and cabs are readily available at the valet entrance.
(NOTE: A few other reviews claimed the $18 a night valet parking fee was steep. Parking is at a premium in the historic distric because it is pedestrian friendly, and that rate is comparable to any of the public lots on River Street or Bay Street that charge $15 for eight hours. It's not a bad deal. )
The AAA rate included complimentary breakfast at the hotel restaurant, Windows. It has a buffet. Christine, the hostess, was awesome. Very polite, would come around often to make sure glasses were filled and everything was satisfactory. The eggs were the icky powdered type, but the bacon and chocolate croissants were good, and they had quite a selection of fresh fruit. Sunday included made to order omelets and waffles, both delicious. We sat two tables over from (who I now know is) actress Renee Jones, who apparently plays Lexie on soap opera Days of Our Lives. Though she was gracious enough to sign an autograph for a throng of blue haired old ladies who obviously loved the show, kudos to the majority of my fellow diners for not bothering the crap out of her. In room dining has a special menu of ice cream treats featuring Haagen-Dazs, and a selection of reasonably priced wines that you can order by the bottle and enjoy in your room. (I'll admit it. We pre-gamed. And, honestly, we post-gamed. We're drunks.)
The fitness center was awesome, with muliple machines of varying types, most of which overlook River Street. I would have prefered a larger, outdoor pool to the indoor splash pool they offer adjacent to the fitness center, but It works well for lap swimming.
The verdict: The bad reviews made me nervous, but the hotel was great. Seriously. It was so conviently located that it could have been the Motel 6 and I would have stayed again. The fact that the accomodations were attractive and comfortable was a perk. :) If you're the type of person who is going to be cheap enough to whine about mandatory valet parking, or a $16 dollar breakfast buffet, you're probably not going to have a good time anywhere. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency over the 4th of July weekend and we had a fantastic time. From the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out, the majority of the staff we encountered were helpful and friendly. We actually arrived an hour earlier than the scheduled check-in at 3:00 and they went ahead and let us check-in with no problem at all. We did have one bad experience in the VU Lounge with the incompetence of one of the waitresses; however, the rest of our stay was wonderful. I highly recommend this hotel based on the location and the service we received. There are a few downfalls, such as; there is no free internet, which is a little ridiculous in my opinion and there is also no continental breakfast, you have the option of a breakfast buffet for $16 p/person, which in my opinion is also a little ridiculous when you can walk down to River Street and get some awesome seafood for less, but to each their own. Overall, we had a great time.

Somewhat marginal for a Hyatt Regency

I stayed here with a group of about 20.
The location was good in terms of walking access to River Street and downtown Savannah. I also generally liked the layout of the hotel, with interior rooms having balconies over the center lobby, and exterior rooms with views. The front desk staff and other employees I encountered were friendly.
Otherwise, there were some downsides. For one thing, this hotel seems like an old property and in need of some updates, especially in the rooms. My room seemed rather worn and wasn't especially clean. The bathtub in particular was not as clean as I would expect at a hotel of this class. The fixtures seemed old. The carpet was worn and there was a slight mildew smell in the room. Wireless internet is available in the room for $10 a day, but you have to enter credit card and billing information repeatedly each day that you want to purchase it (you can't simply bill it to your room). I did order room service a couple of times; the food was always brought within the time promised (about 30 minutes) and was decent, though not outstanding. It was pricey for what you got but I tend to expect this for hotel room service. I did note that a 20% "service charge" is automatically added to the room service bill. The small print says that this includes gratuity. However, they conveniently leave a space on the bill for you to add a tip. Should I feel compelled to add even more??? (How much of a tip do these folks deserve?) Finally, the clientele of this hotel is rather mixed....business people on convention trips, tourist families with lot of kids, and a decent contingent of rednecks on honeymoon... In sum, it's not the classiest Hyatt Regency I've ever experienced.
Overall, if you are going to Savannah and this location is important, this isn't a bad hotel overall. However, I would definitely never stay here without getting a substantial discount. If you expect a luxury hotel experience, you'll probably be disappointed.

We checked in at 8pm. My son was playing his Nintendo DS in the room while I got ready to go out to dinner. In the meantime I called maintenance because our tv remote was not working. When we left my son put his DS and 3 games (each the size of a half dollar) down on the desk. When we returned the remote was fixed but his games were all missing. I turned the room upside down. They were never found. I called and sent a letter to the general manager. She said she would turn it over to their insurance company. They refused the claim because they talked to the maintenance man who denied it (duh). I see that one other person had things missing from their car. Has anyone else been robbed by this hotel?

3 night stay in Savannah in May 2008. We were greeted by a irresponsible appearing valet service who drove my car carelessly (with me in the passenger seat). This is your only parking option - who knows what these guys will do with your car at night. Neither the hotel manager nor the valet manager were interested in finding a solution.
When bringing our soft luggage into the room, our bellhop put them on the floor and then kicked them into place. Not what I would consider luxury service.
Our room was generally clean except for the bathroom tile - mildew. The drinking glasses one day were obviously dirty from 5 feet away - why did the housekeepers put them in the room?
Other incidental things - $10 internet/day, when it is free at Super 8 motels. The restaurant was nice, with good food and good service.
There is noisy construction ongoing on the lot to the immediate west of the Hyatt beginning each day @ 0700 - a new hotel in the early stages of construction. Ask about this when you make your reservations and request a room on the eastern end of the building.
Summary: look elsewhere.
