Won 2 rms (one King and one 2 dbl). Stayed 1 night, on same weekend of big moto race. Really surprised how nice the rooms actually were. Most resort style hotels I've stayed in are not this modern. The room and lobby had a very modern, clean look. Bed and pillows were super comfy. We're from FL, so it was weird not to have AC, but it was cool while we were there, so we kept the balcony screen open and we were fine. There is a nice bar/restaurant in the main lobby with live music. Only complaint is that the bar closed pretty early.
I would agree with other reviewers that the walls are thin and when anyone closed their door it would slam shut. All the front desk people I dealt with were professional, extremely nice and accommodating. I have no complaints and would not hesitate to stay again.

My husband and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Monterey July 4-7, 2008. The rooms are nicely renovated with a comfortable bed and a nice, large LCD flatscreen television. The location is very convenient to downtown Monterey; Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf. Make sure and get your two-day admission tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium at the gift shop; they are the same price as the one day admission! The aquarium does not sell two day tickets. The lobby bar is wonderful with live jazz on certain evenings. The property is very spread out so keep that in mind if you have difficulty walking.

We won this hotel on Priceline for the night of July 4th. Rooms are now remodeled and MUCH improved from when we last stayed there several years ago. New, modern furniture, refurbished bathroom with GREAT walk-in shower, flat screen TV, etc. All room amenities are now 3*+. Borderline 4* except for the layout of the Hyatt is more like a motel than a hotel. Lobby bar with fireplace was a nice spot for an evening cocktail, though pricey (two Irish coffees = $20… ouch). Room was a bit noisy during the day (faced the parking lot), but very quiet at night. Plush bedding made for a very sound night’s sleep. I would recommend the Monterey Hyatt and hope to stay there again. Very strong 3* hotel well situated with easy freeway access to Hwy 1 and a 5 minute drive to Carmel, Fisherman’s Wharf, Cannery Row, etc.

Came for a conference for 7 nights. The wildfires were raging all week (people were evacuated from a nearby town) so the sky was grey and dull all week. I was in Block 3 - near an outside pool but it was being renovated (although I didn't see a single workman all week!) so not in use. The staff were extremely polite and helpful. The breakfast buffet was great. I liked being able to get a coffee and a bagel/muffin and sit by the fire area and read.
As it is a golf resort, the rooms are quite spread out - rooms, conference centre and reception/restaurant area are all separate. The rooms are up to 3 floors high only. My only criticism would be: the conference had a dinner in the ballroom one night but it was very ordinary - for $95 I expected a lot better quality presentation. The restaurant had been great so it was a stark contrast.

Stayed here four nights last week, and the service could not have been worse. Pretty much every interaction my wife and I had with employees was negative, to that point that we avoided them.
Understand first that no room has air conditioning. Normally, this isn't a problem, as Monterey's temperature is usually very pleasant. When we were there, however, the Central Coast area was enduring a heat wave, which made it necessary to open the hotel room windows to circulate the air. Our room, like half the rooms at this Hyatt, face not only a road but a busy and noisy highway. This wasn't some country road in a beach community; it was like having the interstate as your next-door neighbor. Because of the heat, we opened the window each night. And each night, we were treated to the not-so-soothing sounds of highway noise, street sweepers, golf carts driving in reverse and, in our case, the sounds of several dozen motorcycles revving through the parking lot at all hours. There was a motorcycle race in town during our stay, and many of the riders stayed at the Hyatt.
I'm getting ahead of myself, though. Upon arriving, my wife called the front desk and asked if we might change rooms. We noticed the hotel wasn't terribly busy, and we've been accommodated before in similar cases. The clerk told my wife it would cost us an additional $40 per night -- we were paying $230 per night -- to upgrade to a room that faced the golf course. I called the clerk shortly afterward and told him it was ridiculous for them to require guests to choose between discomfort versus noise pollution, either of which prohibits a good night's sleep at what I was told was a four-star hotel. The clerk was difficult, condascending and stubborn, and I lost my temper. He agreed to change our room, and he told me we'd now have a room that faced the golf course, which should be far less noisy. I walked to the front desk and apologized for my behavior, as it had been a long travel day and that I shouldn't have taken it out on him. He rolled his eyes and handed me the key to a room that still faced the highway, only it was a few hundred yards further down.
Additional problems:
- There is potential for safety hazards, as no exterior doors are locked throughout the night. In fact, they're kept open to circulate the air.
- Parking is a nightmare. Three of our four nights, we had to park several hundred yards away from our building.
- Speaking of parking, there are hidden fees that the hotel socks with you with upon check-in. In addition to your room/tax and whatever incidentals you might incur, there is a $12 per night charge for use of the property's "recreation equipment," which consists of a ping-pong table, a tennis court we never saw, board games that supposedly can be borrowed and, of course, parking. This is after the Hyatt's Web site says parking is free at this location.
- Not surprisingly, Internet access costs $10 per day.
- Most of the three-story buildings do not have elevators. In our case, we normally took the stairs to the third floor. But upon checking in and out, we had to drag our luggage to not one but two adjoining buildings to reach the elevator.
- The concierage was rude when my wife called to asked if Highway 1 was open near Big Sur, as fires were ongoing at the time. The concierge interrupted my wife and seemed put out that my wife had called with such a question.
- Upon trying to check out by telephone, we were put on hold for 10 minutes before we finally gave up.
- The location, unless you're there to play golf at the adjoining course, is terrible.
The reviewer who likened this property to a motel is dead-on. I wouldn't stay here again if they paid me. I would strongly discourage anyone from staying here, unless they're here for a golf excursion at Del Monte. Even then, I'm sure you could find more comfortable accommodations at far better prices.
Save your money. Save your patience. As for me, I'll be writing the general manager to tell him why I'll never stay there again and will tell all my friends to avoid it, too.
