With one fairly major exception (which I'll get to later) I enjoyed my stay at this hotel.
At first I was concerned that the Hyatt might be too far "out of town." Although it is about a 30 minute ride into central Kathmandu, that's not likely to be the only place you'll be visiting, so the location is really not inconvenient. The TIbetan Buddhist community of Boudha is just a few minutes walk from the hotel, and was one of the most fascinating places I saw in the 5 days I was in the Kathmandu area.
After seeing the Thamel area, I would not want to stay there. In fact, I wouldn't particularly want to go back there at all.
My room was a stupa view, on the Gold Passport (fifth) floor. The room itself was adequate - the wood floor was quite scruffy and could use a good washing or even refinishing. The bathroom was excellent: large, new and spacious. The bed was very comfortable.
The food at the hotel cafe is reasonably priced (for a Hyatt) and very, very good.
Service staff were sometimes excellent, and sometimes rather distracted. Housekeeping staff were excellent, and went above and beyond what was necessary (neatly folding all my clothes, for example).
One major complaint, and I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned in previous reviews: there is a flock of hundreds of pigeons that roost outside the 5th & 6th floor windows of the hotel every evening. They're quite noisy and dirty. It's particularly disturbing hearing their wings flapping against the window glass inches away from you, and then waking to see pigeon dirt on the windows and ledge outside your room.
By around 9 or 10pm they settle down and I assume go to sleep. But I am really very surprised that the hotel management hasn't addressed this issue, particularly since it's easily solved.

The Hyatt in Kathmandu was the perfect ending to our 12 day vacation/trek in Nepal. The grounds are secluded, near the airport, but with a view of the city of Kathmandu and the largest chorten in the region. There is a nice jogging track that wends around gardens and fountains and a beautiful large swimming pool at its center. The architecture of the building reflects a Nepalese motif, albeit in a very subdued and comfortable way. The lobby promotes serenity as do the rooms. Cleanliness is next to godliness here and the beds extremely comfortable. Also, the food presentation is outstanding -- and, a lot of good fruits and vegetables for munching.
In addition, the staff was extremely attentive to every need and always with a gracious smile from check-in to check-out. The salon and spa were an unexpected delight -- equal to American standards. In fact, we both had the best massages that we've ever had. Too, the hotel manager was extremely affable and accessible at all times.
In short, we had an absolutely delightful stay at this hotel, recommend it extremely highly. If we return again to Nepal, we will definitely be staying here again.

I stayed two nights at the Hyatt after being in Royal Chitwan National PArk for 4 nights. The contrast was amazing whereas the Jungle lodge was clean and high quality the Hyatt is a US/Euro high quality establishment with a Nepali twist. For a Nepal first timer this was a very soft option, safe, no beasties (apart from the resident monkeys), immaculatly clean and a very high staff - resident ratio.
My Club room overlooked the Swaybanuth Stupa which is magnificent with the high mountains towards Everest behind it with other views across Kathmandu with the Anapurna range in the background from the other rooms. The room was large with a very comfortable queen size bed and a splendid bathroom with large shower.
Continental breakfast was in the dedicated lounge, there had been nibbles/drinks in the evening as well. I didn't use the regular restaurant as I was inviited to a special event for the Elephant Polo in one of the function rooms.
When we arrived (1st Dec) there was a Christmas event in the grounds and I have some charming Xmas decorations with Nepali influences for 'Christmas Father' :-)
The extensive grounds, gardens and pool were very well kept and patroled by what appeared to be ex-Gurkhas who gave guests a fine attention and salute. The site is so big spotting it on Google Earth is no problem (look north of the Airport for a big orange building).
Facilities are first class but every now and then you were reminded of the country you are really in. "Sorry there are no eggs for breakfast tomorrow" I was informed while having a snack at lunch time. Ham in my sandwich was Spam. No matter.
It is a very short walk to the Stupa and some other temples nearby but for the city centre the little white taxis are essential (and after which any theme park ride in the world will seem tame...)
The taxi driver and the hotel staff advised me to go to Pokhara but I wanted to see Durbar Sq. I think their choice may have been quieter.
Going onto the streets made you realise how insulated from real Nepal you are in this hotel. If you really want to experience Nepali life stay elsewhere but maybe have your last night at the Hyatt to brush yourself up before your flight home.
