Great stay at the Sunset Plaza!

Our family of four just completed a two-week California vacation that included two nights at the Sunset Plaza. We were very pleased with the hotel, and I agree with the positive TA reviews. We had a double-queen room that overlooked a lovely pool area that resembled a European inn's courtyard. The pool itself was refereshing. The hotel offered an excellent continental breakfast that included fresh pastries, bagels (I am from New York, and these were very good bagels), fruit, cereal and beverages, and employees replenished these items throughout the morning. Parking was plentiful in a secure garage and worth the $12 daily fee. The hotel was also well-situated for our tourist plans, in between Hollywood to the east and Beverly Hills to the west, and was within easy walking distance to some good restaurants, including the fun Saddle Ranch across the street. We had considered staying in Hollywood, but I am glad that we selected the quieter West Hollywood area. I would definitely return to the Sunset Plaza upon my next visit to LA.

The rooms were enormous, and we got two huge comfortable double beds. One corner had a kitchenette area that came with a fridge and sink. Bathroom was spacious too, with a nice Jacuzzi. And this was a standard room. Hotel was walking distance to Chateau Marmont, I highly recommend going there for celeb spotting and dinner. Food at Chateau Marmont is delicious as well. The Standard Hotel down the road is good for drinks by the pool. There were a few other cool bars within walking distance. Breakfast was OK, you got some pastries and boiled eggs. You need a car in LA though. You wouldn’t be able to get around or see the sights without a car, because public transport appears almost non existent. The hotel lacks dining and bar options, but this is not a problem at all because of all the other options nearby. Pool area is so picturesque with lovely d?cor and plants, and great for sunbathing. Pool itself was a bit small though. Our room had these double doors that opened up into the pool area which was nice, it made it not feel like a hotel room. We thought this was going to be noisy, but it wasn’t at all. Car parking was convenient, it was in the hotel basement.

We stayed here for 3 nights in July 2008 and found the hotel to be better than expected. The price is reasonable for LA, and it is quite conveniently located. There is a taxi rank just outside the hotel, which was useful (but we hated the LA taxi drivers - they drive like maniacs.) The basic hotel rooms are extremely large and ours had a nice view of the pool. I would recommend asking for a room with a pool view on the 2nd or third floor. You do not want to be in a room on the street side as it would be very noisy due to traffic and construction accross the road. The included breakfast (consisting of muffins/bagels/crossants/cereal/fruit) was reasonable although neither of the toasters seemed to work very well. The pool is lovely although is in shade after about 4:30pm.
Be warned that if you have a room on the third floor, (like us) which is where reception is, you have to lug your cases up and down about three sets of four stairs before getting to your room, unless you want to pay a hotel clerk to help you with your luggage.
The saddle ranch cafe over the road serves decent lunches and dinners - the portions are absolutely huge though.
Whilst overall we liked the hotel, our main complaints about the hotel were that :
1. the reception staff were unfriendly and one was very rude (he checked us in and did not want to answer any questions and treated us like idiots). We have heard that Los Angeles is an unfriendly town and the attitude of the reception staff certainly did nothing to dispel that.
2. the airconditioning in the rooms was extremely noisy. in addition, if neighboroing rooms put their aircon on, our room got a loud humming sound which was annoying.
3. the fan in the bathroom seemed to do little to get rid of the shower steam and the bathroom was left very hot and foggy as a result.

Nice, accomodating staff. Rooms are small. Windows open. Very clean and nicely appointed. No restaurant or bar or even mini-bar. Great pool area with lovely flowers. The only let down was housekeeping. Service was very good the first and second day. The third day they left my room door adjar so when I came back in the evening I had the usual panic attack when one is left vulnerable, checking all closets, showers, etc., for scary hidden menaces (none found). On this, my last night, they forgot to leave me washcloths.
All of this said, it was a good stay overall. I would recommend understanding that there are limitations.
