We book a double room at the Hotel over the telephone. We arrived to find the hotel like a builders yard, the Brasserie was being rebuilt along with the bar and half of reception. We had to walk over power cables through thick dust to find reception. The receptionist was surly and generally miserable and unhelpful. The lift had graffiti scratched into the doors and some of the mirrored tiles were broken. When we got to our room we had been given a twin room and not a double as booked.
The Receptionist and the duty Manager we not prepared to honor the original booking unless we paid an extra 35.00 euro and so we checked out. We were absolutely disgusted.
We felt that 1) we should have book informed at the time of booking that the public areas were being re built and that 2) We should have been provided with the accommodation we booked.

Hotel Breukelen is situated near the A2 motorway between Utrecht and Amsterdam. It is a famous place, from the outside it looks like an Chinese place. From the inside it is a normal hotel. It is part of the Van der Valk chain.
I stayed in a normal room, which is spacious enough. There are 2 * 1 persons beds, which is as far as I know standard in a normal room in van der Valk hotels. For couples this might be a disadvantage, so call ahead to make sure.
Wireless internet is available in the room for a surcharge.
The restaurant in this hotel is excellent for a hotel restaurant, but very busy. If you want to eat between 17:00 and 19:00, make sure to have reservations. After 8 pm, the place is quiet enough to just walk-in.
There is no swimmingpool or gym. There is a sauna, which is available for a surcharge.
Overall, the hotel offers godo value for money and Amsterdam is easily reachable by car or train.

My wife and I stayed for one night in this hotel on September 2005 after spending a day in De Effteling park and just before flying back home from Amsterdam.
The hotel is very easy to find and even though a train runs right by - it's very quiet.
The room was very comfortable and the restaurant very pleasant. We had dinner in the hotel and I should commend the staff for replacing our order that wasn't what we hoped for with no problem and no charge. Breakfast was pretty good as well.
I would recomend this hotel to anyone in need of a nice place close to schiphol airport or if you happen to pass by.

A very busy place on the highway between Utrecht and Amsterdam. The outside is built like a Chinese palace, but inside it is just an ordinary hotel, without repeating the Chinese theme.
The bar and the restaurant are nice, clean and offer excellent service. But when it comes to the rooms, I feel that the hotel is a bit past its time: Many things like the fixtures, doors etc. show signs of heavy use, and the cleanlyness is not perfect: There were some odd spots on the bathroom floor, and even some hair of a former guest on the hairdryer...
Even though the place is very, very busy (seemed to be fully booked) and you have the highway on one side and the train-line on the other, our room was very quiet, with the window towards the inner courtyard.
After all, if you book their "Bed and Breakfast Special" on the Internet, you can get very good value for money.
