I've just returned from NYC where I stayed 3 nights at the Gershwin Hotel. The best thing about it is the location. Actually, my expectations were low but, for my surprise, I had a good experience there. It looks like weird when you see the pictures and it's exactly like that when you arrive there. But don't worry, it's fine. This hotel was the cheapest with private bathroom inside the room I found in the city, that's why I chose it. The room is very small, but both the room and bathroom are clean. People were nice and gave me tips for the subway and taxis. The location is not bad at all, the Empire State building is very close, like 3-4 blocks and there is a good option for breakfast, lunch and dining (also pretty cheap) just 1 block from the hotel. The subway station is also close (1 1/2 block). I wouldn't recommend it for families and seniors.

The hotel was in a great location for sight seeing, very close to the Empire State building, but on a quiet street. I would recommend this hotel if you really want to get away from the faceless chain hotels and stay somewhere a bit quirky. Staff were helpful, the room was pretty small but I think that's fairly standard for this price in New York. One downside - very very thin walls. We could hear someone in the neighbouring room snore all night long ..

This place looks OK on the website , BUT
Its really just a glorified rooming house , not a hotel
Yes , it has some cheap rooms advertised, but we booked a couple of months early , got an internet rate and STILL paid about $230 for a room. Its way overpriced for what you get
The place is decorated like a dutch squat , and the staff are only one step up from the kind of folk you see working at homeless shelters. They must be used to people checking out early , as we were supposed to be there for 5 nights and left after the first one.
There are hundreds of hotels in New York , so you'd be better off paying another $30 a night and staying somewhere where they have tried a bit harder, The room was clean , but the bedsheets etc were old and scruffy and the room definately needed a bit of work. Also the bathroom was small and the water was either freezing or boiling. Stay somewhere else............
Quirky Hotel

Last minute stay in New York and booked by phone for Family Room, last room available after trying at least 10 other hotels. Suite clean but old. Two rooms, shower room, fridge, fLCD TVs in each room, safe, all you need really. Staff very friendly. Very arty hotel, Andy Wahol used to hang out here in the 60's. Still lots of his art about. A very quirky hotel in a great location.
