We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Fuerte Grazalema Hotel and although the weather was not that good we had a very enjoyable stay, a bar lunch in front of a large log fire while the rain poured down one day was a real treat
The hotel is set in the National Park and is some distance from any big town, Ronda being the nearest just under an hour away, but the scenery is worth the travel to visit the surrounding white villages
We asked for a quiet room away from bars and music and had a room on the 4th floor although this is only one floor up from reception. The room had wonderful views across the valley to the village of Grazalema. The only problem was that if you wished to sit on the balcony the high wall blocked out any view.
We asked to be moved to the ground floor, 2 floors below reception which have small patios which still look across the valley which meant you could sit with a glass of wine and take in the view with no problem. There are 17 rooms on this level, room 101 the room we had was across the passage from the pool bar which I guess when open could make it a noise room so would suggest the rooms at the other end (117) would be much better.
Breakfast was first class with all the usual things one would expect and I really liked the freshly cooked bacon and egg that was on offer. Dinner again was first class although you will need to like pork as this was the main meat dish each evening but plenty of other dishes where available.
Reception where very helpful but I did have a problem in using my Euro Travelers Cheques.
Once again all I can say is we really enjoyed our stay and if the weather had been better this would have made everything just that little bit better. Our thanks to all the staff at the hotel for all your help during our stay nothing was to much trouble for them.

We spent 5 nights here on our honeymoon in Oct 07. Its an absolutely beautiful hotel with amazing scenery! Rustic yet refined. Rooms are nice and all have a view. Staff was friendly and helpful. Fun game room with a pool table, ping pong, video games, etc. There is a pool but its not heated and was ice cold. Great breakfast buffet and dinner. We opted to get the breakfast included but not dinner so dinners were a little expensive at 18 Euros per person not including alcohol.
The only reason I did not rate this hotel a 5 is because of these two small complaints...
The outdoor hottub was only luke warm. This was a real disappointment because the cool nights and starry sky would have made it perfectly romatic to take a hottub. It was solar heated but apparently they didn't have enough panels or a battery to store the energy because though it was bright and sunny all day, by dusk the tub was nearly cool. Bummer!
Also, we didn't realize how far from other towns & cities this hotel was. Grazelema is only 5 km away but when we were there in Oct. it was sleepy and mostly closed down, no night life and few restaurants open. The next closest town is Rhonda (a must see) which is only 20km away but takes over 1/2 hour to reach on the twisty, hilly roads. Reaching other destinations from the hotel took 3-4 times longer than anticipated. Many roads are only two lane, curvy and in the mountains. Coming home in the pitch black darkness was an experience we only had to do once to find out how much it sucked, so we ate most of our dinners in the hotel and stayed in at night. I guess we just hoped to spend more time siteseeing in the surrounding towns and cities.
If you are going to this hotel to relax and get away (without a hotub) I highly recommend it. If you are looking to be in a more central location maybe stay here for a night or two and then move on. The scenery is not to be missed!
Cheers!
