Just returned from a trip to Italy ending in Rome. After a lot of research we chose Hotel Mellini for a 4 night stay. We booked a triple room for 250 euros a night directly through the hotel site. With the current exchange rate, the room cost us $480 per night. At that price one would expect a nice experience.
Unfortunately our experience started with very indifferent service at check-in. There was no bellman available to help us with our bags into the lobby. After check-in we got the luggage cart and started to haul our bags. Only then did the desk clerk call someone.
We were shown to our room on the sixth floor (the top). It looked nothing like any photos on the website. There was no "luxury" bedspread on the bed, just the sheets. The curtains were plain and thin. The one upholstered chair was horribly stained. The dresser and desk were scratched beyond repair. The bathroom was underlit and not very special-looking. The worst part was the very noisy air conditioner which did not cool the room. It was a hot, stuffy and noisy night.
After a terrible night sleep the first thing we did was book another hotel for the remainder of the trip.
We have never stayed at a $480 per night hotel that was so poor. Bottom line -- if a hotel is simply no good, you don't need to suffer through with it.

This hotel is hidden away near the river in a quiet location. We walked everywhere during out stay in Rome and although the main attractions are not on the hotel doorstep, they are close enough to walk to.
The hotel is small and clean and the reception staff are there if you need them but mostly just leave you to get on with it. They all speak perfect English.
Our room was spacious and clean with a good en-suite.
The breakfast was very continental and not that great!
Overall I would recommend it for a city break as it ticks all of the boxes and is a good base for exploring. It is a very good price for 4 star in Rome.

A beautiful hotel with exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. We had a superior room, which even with a cot in still felt huge. The hotel is not located in the heart of town but no more than 10-15 minute walk over the River Taba. Breakfast is as you would expect in a continental hotel. I would most definitely stay at this hotel for my next visit to Rome.

My wife and I went to Rome for my 65th Birthday and stayed at the 'Dei Mellini'. The place was exactly as their brochure had described and we found the Reception staff to be more than helpful. We walked everywhere in the City and found the location to be fine , close to the Vatican but further to the Colessium. We found the distances to the various Historical sites generally nearer than anticipated. In the evening the area was quiet and safe (almost next door to the 'Cabinieri' station) which was most welcome after a hectic day's sightseeing. The Hotel management surprised us with a bottle of 'sparkly' for my birthday which we thought was a nice gesture. The breakast was more than adequate, cold meats, cereals, cheese, fruits, jams and fresh fruit juice with a choice of teas and coffee. We would definitely consider staying at the Mellini again and would reccomend a great little Ristorante called the 'Sor' Eva', Piazza della Rovere on the banks of the Tiber (the same side as the Hotel and two bridges down from the Castel S. Angelo.) Every night it was full of Romans; a sure sign of quality and sensible pricing!

I booked this 4 star hotel via BA.com which to my surprise was considerably cheaper than expaedia and other such sites. The hotels staff were extremely friendly and always willing to assist with obtaining taxis, restaurant tables advice on travel within Rome etc. The hotel rooms were well furnished and immaculately kept. The hotels breakfast was continental and adequate. The hotel itself is situated 150 yards from the Ponte Cavour bridge which itself is 100 yards from main shopping street in Rome Via Del Corsa. Other attractions wihin easy walking distance include the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheonand Piazza Navonna. I would suggest a taxi is the best and quickest method of reaching the Vatican and the Colloseum costs 8 euros approx. Certain parts of Rome are seady and graffiti is prevalent as is litter. The Dei Mellini is in a business area and a major police station is in the same street perhaps that was the reason why the area was quiet and no graffiti was evident. There are a number of good restaurants close to the hotel. I would definitely stay at this hotel if I returned to Rome again. But be warned the traffic in central Rome is horrendous.
