Overview and availability
St. Michael s Manor has been owned by the Newling Ward family since 1965 when David Newling Ward set up the business with his late parents. The hotel has, in its time, been run by Grandfather, Father and Son. However our current General Manager is Paul Crossey who has been with the Hotel since 2002. The Newling Ward family also own Darcy's, a modern restaurant in the centre of St. Albans which serves European dishes with an exciting Asian influence. In addition to this a new restaurant 'Dylans', located in Cockfosters opened its doors in May 2005.
Located in the historic district of St. Albans, with its 70 listed buildings, old inns and mills, the Manor is situated within 7 acres of manicured gardens and backs on to the river Ver and Verulamium Park. The hotel is in the shadow of the magnificent Abbey and is a mere 10 minutes walk from the hotel.
Built in 1530 but laid on medieval foundations the site can be traced back to the 11th Century. Parts of the original flooring are still in evidence in the Hotel's cellars today. Originally a Tannery, the house was built by John Gape a well respected Tanner, and continued to be owned by his descendants up until the 1960's when it was purchased by the Newling Wards.
For the last three decades the family has nurtured and restored the house and gardens to their present glory and continues to take pride in all its aspects.
