Quaint Hotel in the "Brooklyn" of Stockholm

I stayed at the Columbus with my Mom in June 2008 and was pleasantly surprised. It is in Sodermalm on the edge of "SOFO" where there are many funky shops and restaurants. The area is mostly residential, with a sprinkling of cool and hip things to do. It is a short metro ride to Gamla Stan, or you can walk it if you like. The hotel is an old building which surrounds a central courtyard where, in the summer, you can have breakfast or an afternoon wine, listening to birds and conversing with other guests. The staff is nice, and somewhat helpful. The hotel has "old world" charm, wood floors, tall windows and some shared balconies. Bathrooms are small, but functional. The sinks need to be bigger and there is zero shelving in the bathroom to put your things. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. Thank goodness for the heavy curtains... you need them in summer to keep out the sun coming up at 3:00am! /There are cheaper rooms up on the top floor, which are a great bargain. All in all, a great place to stay!

Went to see a concert in S?dermalm, so for us the location was great. Friendly staff. The breakfast buffet was really simple, but ok. Sound insulation isn't too great, so you will hear steps from the wooden-floor corridors. But this is not a nightlife party hotel so you'll get to enjoy your peace and quiet. The price was a bit expensive, but that just seems to be the normal way in Stockholm.

I'd just like to add to fellow trip advisor's comments that this hotel is a great find. I stayed there in June 2007 with my elderly parents and returned in MArch 2008 with teenage children.
It's convenient, clean, quiet with friendly, helpful staff, and a great breakfast. As others have mentioned, the building is full of character (don't be put off by the initial impression. The street it's in isn't very charming although it's through an archway into a quiet courtyard)
It's lovely to spend time in a hotel in Europe which feels like it belongs to Sweden and not some multi-international chain hotel!

The Annex--A nice budget (relatively speaking) option

We stayed on the top floor (the Annex), for just one night. We were very happy with our experience, in general. We were allowed to check in early, much needed after an early AM arrival on a trans-Atlantic flight. We found the room very clean and charming. The bathrooms were clean, if a bit of a stroll.
However, given a choice, I would request a room facing the north side (towards the church). Our room faced south, towards the street. There were a lot of loud cars and motorcycles passing on the busy street a block away, into the wee hours of the night.

Located on the Sodermalm island, very close to the
subway station Medborgardplatsen, Columbus Hotel is
very picturesque, with quaint corridors and rooms with nice
old furniture (old, in a good way: don't worry, you won't
smash your bed!).
Since I booked one of the Annexe rooms, the bathroom was
a shared one... yet, I had a basin for washing hands within
the room.
The staff was friendly and so were the guests. No complaints
about the breakfast either, as there was plenty to choose from:
bread, cheese, ham, eggs, salad and two types of yoghourt.
And maybe something more, but I don't remember.
If you need to check the internet, a laptop is available at
the entrance.
Hotel payment is made upon check-in.
I don't think there is an elevator, but since i only had small
baggage I didn't bother looking for it... and, besides, I usually
prefer stairs anyway.
Overall, I had a good time and a good night!
