Don't stay her unless you are an extremely sound sleeper or you enjoy waking up to trains going by every few minutes. The morning after our stay the front desk told us that they have 150 trains go by every day and night.

This had to be the noisiest hotel I ever stayed in, between the train that came by every 1 1/2 hrs all night, and the puppy that stayed next door, that barked all night, and got my dogs barking, we got no sleep.
That coupled with the terribly soft bed that killed my back and my husband's.
The only saving grace for this hotel was the lovely young woman who ran the breakfast room. She was wonderful. Unfortunately, she told us she was leaving at the end of Feb for another job in Las Vegas.
The pool was covered, but was not inside the hotel, therefore, considering the temp outside and the 5 inches of snow we had, I couldn't let my granddaughter go swimming.
The snow was not their fault, obviously, but it would have been nice if the snow was shovelled before we had to plow through it to take the dogs out. They didn't shovel until around 9, it was ridiculous.
But then on our last night there (thank God we only were stuck here 2 nights) my dog came out from under the bed with a Twizzler in her mouth. Since none of our family eat Twizzlers it was obvious that the room had not been totally cleaned before we got there, which bothered me.
It was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, barr none!

The room was comfortable and clean. I was there during the winter so AC was not a problem for me and the heater worked just fine. The staff was pleasant and the continental breakfast was quite adequate. My only negative comment is how unbearably noisy it was due to the train that runs 24/7/365. I don't think I got a combined two hours of sleep all night. In addition to the train noise, there seemed to be a night club nearby that was playing loud polka music until after midnight. I enjoyed my visit to Flagstaff, but I will never stay along Route 66 or near the tracks again. Which also means I will never stay at this Best Western again. The noise is unbearable.

Mere yards from major transcontinental railroad track in use 24 hours/
day. Bring earplugs!
Light switches for lights over bed did not work - lights were "ON" only when an extension cord was plugged in (which could not be reached from the bed). The clock was plugged into the same extension cord, though, so when you unplugged the extension cord to turn the lights off for sleeping, the clock quit. We had to unplug the desk lamp at night and plug the clock into that wall plug and put the clock over on the desk so that we could have the lights off to sleep and still have the alarm clock working! Then, of course, we had to undo the clock and plug the desk lamp back in to be able to work or read at the desk when the sun wasn't shining. Tell us, please, does management here care or NOT!?!
Continental breakfast is served only in a small separate building across the parking lot. OK if it's a nice day, but in snow, rain, wind, or cold temperature, we imagine it would be an unpleasant walk, especially for the very young (and their parents) or the very old. (Breakfast staff was the nicest part of our stay, but obviously you have to get to them first.)
Toilet required multiple flushes to get it to work.
We're GCCI members, but didn't have reservations. Desk clerk at check
-in said they'd look up our number and enter it into the hotel computer for our GCCI points. At check-out that had not been done, and when check-out clerk attempted it, she hit the wrong key and closed-out the system. She said we could wait until she could get back in - several minutes, apparently -, or we could leave and she'd put our number in when the system came back up. We had to call back after we got home to finally get that done.
Since we didn't have a reservation, we relied on AAA's current Arizona Guidebook, which lists this as a 3-star facility. We have written a detailed letter to AAA telling them we have never stayed in any other of their 3-star rated hotels which was this bad. We're recommending they visit again and re-check their rating!

We stayed one night at the Pony Soldier and it was ok but not great. The room was clean and adequate. WiFi worked fine and the staff was helpful. This motel is definately the low end for Best Western. I have in the past used the Best Western name as a first choice in looking for hotels but increasingly I am finding thier properties highly variable. The main problem at the Pony Soldier is the train - every 20 minutes all night long and loud. At least ask for a room at the back, it may help. Better yet get a similar adequate hotel down by the Northern Arizona University and away from the train.
