Hell in Harrogate?

We had a problem with noise in our bathroom, which the receptionist assured us was due to the saniflow system. When we asked to change room as maintenance did not come to check on the problem the receptionist was rude and ignorant, talking about 'us' in front of us with the reservations' manager - 'I've told them it's the saniflow but they still want to change.' It was clear to us that it was a technical fault, and when it emerged that indeed it was a technical fault they did change our room though not without quibbling about the nature of the problem and without apology. The breakfast was mediocre, and the staff seemed disorganised with little courtesy. The staff were visibly complaining to one another with one person on the front reception desk complaining about his working hours. The rooms themselves do not match the description and photos on the website, which shows clean and contemporary finishes. Both rooms we viewed appeared worn - it did not appear that the hotel had been refurbished so much as patched up with wallpaper, with visible damp. There were not sufficient amenities in the bathroom, and we arrived to one set of towels and one glass in the room. Our stay proved to be more Fawlty Towers than fantastic.

One night away with a small group of friends for a 'classy' hen night! Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the room; double on the 3rd floor overlooking Harrogate centre including parklands and Betty's tea room. Room nice and clean, comfortable, though the bathroom was insome need of modernisation. However, everything functionally perfectly well. Excellent central location for bars, restaurants and shops. Would recommend, but try to get a room at the front of the hotel, as other people in our party had rear facing rooms overlooking an alley way.
Hotel not overpriced, considering its location in the lovely town of Harrogate.

The web site says it has recently been refurbished but it does not seem that way and I can only assume the web site has not been updated for several years. It is clean but tired in parts. The rooms smell of damp caused presumably by moisture/splashes from the showers being absorbed by the fireboard bath panels which looked in need of replacement. We ended up seeing two rooms and both had the same damp smell and problem but I do stress were clean. The rooms are far from exceptional. Breakfast was expensive for what it was. Staff friendly and very helpful and its location is very good but it is overpriced for the quality given. This hotel could be very good but it needs the refurbishment doing that the web site says was done.

The Yorkshire hotel is situated well, bang in the centre of Harrogate with fabulous views of the stray and just across the road from the famous Bettys tea rooms. The hotel is in a beautiful building and clearly has been recently renovated, that said they didnt necessarily pull out all the stops when renovating. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. The lounge was comfortable with complimentary copies of the Independent newspaper available. The furnishings were comfortable and it was a great place to chill out in. The room we had was well furnished with a fantastically comfortable queen size bed. The room had been well decorated and the bathroom was well equipped. The remote control for the LCD TV was not working and nor were reception able to get a replacement, so it was a bore to have to get up to change channel etc all the time - but that was a minor niggle. The breakfast itself was adequate, although table service was incredibly disorganised - staff seemed unsure as to what their duties were and tables were left uncleared for a long time meaning queues built up for waiting guests. I have also never seen a hotel run out of orange juice before - this one did. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening preferring to go out - we can thoroughly recommend the Harroagte Grille!, one of the best restaurants we have eaten in - but the bar was busy with a good range of drinks with efficient, attractive and knowledagable staff. All in all, its a decent hotel which offered us good value for money. It needs a bit more organisation and some touching up where the renovation did not quite finish or live up to the high standards.
