We stayed at Highfield House for one night prior to joining a cruise ship at Southampton docks. For the price of ?55 for a twin room including full English breakfast, one really can't complain. The hotel isn't the most modern, but the staff are friendly, the location good for the docks (although not in the greatest part of town), and the rooms clean and better than expected. Just be sure not to stay in the rooms above the adjoining bistro/bar - the hotel is near the University, and the bar has more than its share of students occupying it until late, who can be quite noisy. Overall, above average for the price, and fine for a short stay.

Stayed in the Highfield for 4 nights,
arrived late at night and was tired, they gave me directions to the room.
the room was very modern and trendy, 26" LCD on the wall all in all very happy.
the only problem was when I was staying there. the heater was on. Making the room very hot and uncomfortable to stay in. Called the reception and I was told that there was nothing that they could of done as it was late.
Even though the heater said off it still was very hot and LOUD,
I didnt fancy sleeping with the window open as I am a light sleeper..
I complained in the morning and was told that in the side of the building I was staying they were having problems with the pipes.
After the 2nd night they changed me into another room apart from that I enjoyed my stay.
I would love to go back and stay if I had the oppertunity, as long as im not in a noisy / sauna of a room

A relief

After a terrible start at Jurys Inn, Highfield House was a welcome relief. The room was a little small, but perfectly comfortable and far better appointed than my room at Jurys. I loved the towel rack warmer in the morning =)
Free wireless, free breakfast buffet, nice staff, decent restaurant next door--no complaints.
A good hotel in a decent part of Southampton

When I was an exchange student, I spent almost nine months (2005/06) in this hotel and it really appealed to me. That's why I decided to come for three nights in May 2008. In 2007, it was completely refurbished with LCD-TV and breakfast facilities and they got rid of the single basic rooms which cost only 80 to 90 Pounds a week this time.
The rooms are good, clean and equipped with new furnitures. The only drawback is that no mini-bar with cold drinks was established. Especially during hot days, it is unbearable. Unfortunately, there is no vending machine at the reception where you could buy a cold drink either.
If you book a room, don't forget to reserve one which has a window to the rear car park because there's a student pub nearby the hotel. During weekend it's so noisy there in the late evenings.
The staff is very, very, very friendly and helpful. The main shopping area of Portswood is just 2 minutes on foot away, the university is very close, too. My parents and me paid approx 80 Pounds for one night in a family room with English and Continental breakfast which is adequate. The hotel is situated in one of the better parts of Southampton, only 15 minutes to the city centre by bus. Additionally, parking is for free.

I stayed in a single room for one night in November 2007. The member of staff who booked me in was very friendly, almost overwhelmingly so (not that this is a problem!). The room was big enough for one person; the bathroom in particular was large. The refurbished room was comfortable and included a chair, small occasional table and another bench that could be used as a desk. Lighting was energy-saving so a bit dim but I admire the fact that they are using these bulbs. There is a safe too and plenty of hanging space. The bed was comfortable and I was warm enough. The bathroom hadn't been renovated but was clean and had all I needed, though the empty shampoo bottles from the previous occupant were still in the shower. The power shower was a bit average, but that's English showers for you! The breakfast was nice and had a range of options. There is free wireless internet access that I only found out about after chancing on a small sign on one of the tables in reception. You need to get a code from them but there is no charge; contrary to the information in the rooms.
For me the one drawback of this hotel is the soundproofing between rooms, although I am sensitive to noise. I could hear the person having a bath in the room next to me very clearly and television noise was coming through from the room below. I was not too close to the bar noise as I was on the second floor but can easily see how this would be an issue for nearby rooms on the first floor. So if you're worried about this perhaps ask for a room away from the (separate) bar.
