Location is incredible...the rest is just alright.
GOOD STUFF
*The location - you wake up to the sound of the waves gently splashing (or crashing if the weather is bad!) and a view of boats bobbing in the estuary. Picture-postcard perfect.
*The Rebecca Suite - we were thrilled to find we had our own private patio which overlooks the harbour as part of the room. We were not so thrilled when it rained the whole time but in the sunshine this would be an unbelievable plus.
*Service - We checked in very late but the night porter was expecting us and was friendly and helpful.
BAD STUFF
*Car parking - like any sweet Cornish town, it wasn't built for cars. The hotel does have it's own car park but it's tiny, it's really badly maintained, you have to book it if you want a space as there is not enough room for everyone and you need a degree in geometry to park your car in it.
*The Fowey has seen better days - it's clean but it's shabby. You get the feeling that nothing is under 10 years old.
*Breakfast - it's not great. The tables are left once they have been used (rather than cleared and reset for more guests) meaning that if you arrive towards the end of service you are likely to be sitting among other people's toast crumbs until you can grab someone and ask them to sort it out. The food itself is fine but pretty uninspiring.
In general I would say that The Fowey feels like a place which is just coasting (pardon the pun) along. The location is so good that they will never be short of people wanting to stay there so it feels like they aren't really trying that hard to maintain the place or - God forbid - move forward.
Having said that, the room we had was superb and the staff were very nice - if you are after somewhere to stay in this part of the world you could do a lot, lot worse.

We had booked a superior room as we wanted to have sea views. When we first walked into the room, we were disappointed that, while the huge windows offered us fantastic panoramic views, they were also dirty and splattered with bird excrement! Unfortunately, the weather was very miserable throughout our stay so we could not make the most of the outside space the hotel offers.
The blankets and bedspreads were grubby with stains on them and my pillow had a hair on it. The carpet also needed a jolly good clean as this too was stained and looked dirty. The bathroom was cleaner than the bedroom. Overall, we were disappointed with the shabby feeling of the room for the price (?178 B+B). It also bothered us that dirty sheets and laundry lined the corridors for most of the day after the chambermaids had cleaned the rooms.
We ate in the restaurant for two nights and the bar for the third and the food was very good - beautifully presented and fresh. Breakfast was OK, although the portions of scrambled eggs are far from generous and the dining room needed a good hoover as there were crumbs all over the floor.
The staff are friendly and helpful enough.
What makes this hotel is the location and the views but it definitely needs a good clean and staff should keep on top of this.
We would have expected more for our money.

this was the third time we have stayed in the fowey hotel, our room was the best so far with lovely views across to Polruan and the sea. The staff were nice but there was a noticeable difference in the speed of service in the resturaunt,,it had become slower maybe the chef was having an off day.the food was good but the menue changed little over the three days we stayed.I still feel the ?15 per day charge for parking was a bit steep but then you have little choice.Fowey is a lovely place to visit and the ship pub offers very good value for money meals.
i think a bit more effort could be made to clean the windows both in the rooms and the general areas.a place to visit is Landyrock house near Bodmin this is a stunning example of Victorian Britian.
In spite of these comments i have no doubt we will return.

Had a really lovely stay here for my birthday in January. Although the hotel had to call us in advance to warn us that their hot water was out of order- they offered to find us an alternative or the option of cancelling but we decided to stay.
The staff were lovely- kept apologising and couldn't do enough for us.
Room was great- wonderful view of the river estuary. The hotel is full of old world charm but brought up to date with beautiful renovation. Hotel also had great location- just 5 min walk to centre of town.
Our room did not appear to have been recently updated but was perfectly nice. We got a really cheap rate therefore I am assuming that we were in one of the more modest rooms- however it was absolutely fine.
I would highly reccomend this hotel.

2 couples, 2 night stay at The Fowey Hotel. Nice hotel, but dated. Excellent location and views. Lovely room, clean, nice bathroom and separate shower. Although jacuzzi bath not working, reported but not fixed! Would have been lovely to have a small table outside on the terrace, not much room. Breakfast very nice, friendly staff, no warm food available for room service as no chef works late.
In need of some refurb as bit tatty but had charm, probably suited to older travellers. Reflected in price.
Parking available for ?15 a night, tight parking spaces all around in Fowey as streets etc very narrow and steep but all part of the charm.
Ferry across to Polruan ?1.20 each way, although no shops over there, couple of pubs.
To eat: Restaurant, Food for Thought, excellent service and food. Old Quay Hotel, eat out on terrace, beautiful view, service and had a sneaky look at the rooms - fab!
13 miles to Padstow to Rick Steins Seafood restaurant - excellent!
