My wife and I stayed for two nights on one of the group's offers of ?35 per night B&B with dinner on the first night . First impressions were very good, a charming old property in a pleasant setting. The breakfast choice and quality were excellent, the evening meals just ok. The bedroom was a good size but much like the rest of the hotel in need of some restoration. The silver duct tape (seven pieces) stuck over holes in the wall and ceiling somewhat spoilt the ambience. The bathroom looked like Barry Bucknall had done the fitting. The staff were very friendly and helpful at all times and we weren't over charged on checkout.(a rare thing in my experience). Overall we enjoyed our stay.

The outside of the hotel is beautiful and I really hoped the room would be too. Sadly it was not. The room was very shabby. It was dirty with cobwebs everywhere. There were holes in the wall which had been covered with silver duct tape. During the night the temperature rose to what seemed like 90 degrees. The worst, however, was the fleas. Yes, I got bitten several times during the night.
On a brighter note the staff were very nice and pleasant and breakfast was okay.
Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

My husband and I stayed for 1 night in what I was told when booking was the "best room" in the hotel, this turned out to be no16 the burghley suite and at £145 for one night we were not impressed. We have to say though that the staff were very friendly and efficient and the evening meals and breakfast were excellent, the downfall lies with the room....we accept that an old buildings character lies in the slightly bowed walls and slight sagging in the ceilings but when damaged to said walls and ceilings are covered over with shiny silver foil duck tape this was a let down, and in the bathroom there was a distinct lack of hot water so a bath was out of the question, we had to make do with boiling the kettle to have decent wash and again plenty of silver foil duck tape holding fittings and ceiling together. The room was also situated above the smoking area in the courtyard and if the youngsters of the town are keeping you awake then open the window and yell Shut Up to them and it does the trick !! If this really was the "best room" we would rather not see the basic ones!
We are not usually in the habit of paying such high room rates and don't think we will again. That said the town and surrounding countryside is gorgeous and well worth a visit as is the rose and crown in town for a lovely pub lunch.

My wife and I spent a couple of days at the hotel and we both agreed that, whilst there were one or two things in need of maintenance, the location and convenience of the place was excellent.
The town itself is a conservationist's dream as are all the surrounding villages.
Above all, our lasting impression will be the friendliness of the staff, many of whom have worked together for many years - perhaps a testament to the character of the place
