A NIce Hotel if You Have to be in Jeddah

If you are doing business in Saudi Arabia, the Jeddah Hilton provides a respite from the disadvantages of the surroundings. The rooms are comfortable and well maintained, and are also a decent size. The lobby is quite impressive and the hotel has a luxurious look.
Most of the restaurants are somewhat disappointing, so I found myself ordering from room service fairly often, just so I could choose the best from each. The main restaurant serves only buffet style, except for some limited hours in the afternoon, so I rarely ate there, except for breakfast. There is another restaurant that tries to emulate an American '50s diner, but it fails miserably. I remember those diners, and they never served a hamburger with a hole in the middle, as they do in this restaurant. The Persian restaurant provides great food and attentive service.
I didn't know how lucky I was to stay at the Hilton in Jeddah, until we were required to leave for three days to make way for participants of the recent oil summit. We got very little notice from the hotel, but they were subject to a royal decree that they could not ignore. The Hilton management did all they could to arrange rooms for us at an alternative hotel, which didn't come close to the comfort of the Hilton. But, that's another review altogether. Needless to say, I was glad to get back to the Hilton after three days in a relative dump.
The Hilton is pretty far from the central business district of Jeddah, but that isn't really a bad thing. The Jeddah Hilton is a good choice, especially considering the alternatives.

This is a very large dated hotel - i'm sure there are better options in Jeddah. Internet is charged at SR100 a day and simple sandwich and soft drink costs approx SR125 - quite a lot for Jeddah I thought.
It's also located a good way from the city centre so not the most convenient for those with lots of different meetings around the city.
staff where very friendly but service was slow and rather inefficient

We stayed at the Hilton for 2 nights and we could not fault it in anyway. It has one of the most impressive and beautiful lobbies I have seen. The rooms are very comfortable with great views from the balcony and room service was good. The Hilton has an excellent choice of restaurants, particularly the buffet style which served excellent seafood. The health club is of the highest standard with heated pools, gym, tennis and bowling. We also travelled to the private beach which is about 30 minutes drive away, where we could relax and play some beach volleyball, water sports etc.The Hilton organised free transport to and from the beach. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful at all times. Overall I would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there again.

I stayed in this hotel during my trip to Jeddah based on the reviews and the somewhat favorable rate for a hotel on the Corniche location in Jeddah. Unfortunately the reviews describe a different hilton to the one I experienced. It started with arrival, where I was bluntly told the room I had reserved was not in their system, and that the hotel was fully booked. After a lot of insisting the receptionist, with very poor understanding of English and not much of an interest in my problem, finally did locate my reservation
The lobby is impresive and creates high expectations about the rooms. Unfortunately all the money seems to have been spent on the lobby. The rooms are small even when you are used to travelling in Europe, and the bathroom not up to standard (no seperate shower, very basic supplies). Despite my requests in the reservation and at the reception, it was apparently not possible to give a seaview room and my room overlooked the ballroom roof.
For dinner I tried their american diner. Decor is nice if fake and overdone but service?? Imagine a surly waiter who has no idea what a diner is all about, no music, 3 TV screens all with different sports but no volume. Anyhting asked was too much trouble, the chilli (huge portion, but the prices do warrant a huge portion) came with 5 chips and no rice. When asked for some rice the man pretended not too understand until I told him I would get it myself from the buffet in the restaurant next door. Then it took him 10 minutes to get a small bowl of rice.
Same service the following morning at room service followed by a doormen who would not get a taxi and a battle to get out of the security fence all round the hotel and I had just about had enough. I contacted the Sheraton next door who had a very nice room with a great view from where I am writing this review. Next time in Jeddah I know where I will place my head on the pillow, and it's not the Hilton!
