Very good conference hotel

This was a conference hotel for me and for three days, the staff could not have been more helpful. The cheaper conference rate rooms are reached by a bridge over the road, but mine was very adequate with a large bed and a nice bathroom. The buffet was overwhelming and the snacks we were served were incredible. Checkout was easy and this was a great location for riverside walks/runs, shopping, eating out, museum and church going.

Not for us

We had made a reservation in advance and duly checked in. Forty minutes later we had checked out and had a room at the Hyatt Regency.
The main problem with this hotel is that half of it is reached via a bridge over the road. The riverside part has rooms with views, reception, the restaurant etc. The other part has... nothing, and it's a long walk from reception. We needed a wheelchair-accessible room, and guess which part they are all in? The room we were given was very large, but dated, faded, and faced a noisy back street. I know it was noisy because the first thing I did was open the window because the room was hot. I couldn't get any cold air from the aircon - it's turned off in October, apparently.
I'm sure this hotel is fine if you get a nice room in the riverside part. But it wasn't for us.

We stayed here two nights at the end of October. We took a king-bedded room on the 7th floor overlooking the front of the hotel.
Cleanliness -- exceptional
Comfort of room - very good, but the bedding left a lot to be desired. Only two small square pillows on a king-sized bed. I'm sure we could have got more if we had asked, but we made do. It would have made sense to have more pillows in the room. Also, the feather duvet caused problems in that during the night all the filling travelled to the bottom of the duvet so I had to turn it right round to keep warm. However, the bed itself was very comfortable. Room and bathroom both a reasonable size.
Staff - extremely pleasant, charming and helpful, both in reception and in the restaurant.
Location - excellent. Right on the banks of the Rhine and within easy walking distance of the old-town. A good walk from the station, but we walked it twice. A taxi from the station costs 7.50 euros.
Noise factor - a very quiet hotel both internally and externally. The external soundproofing is amazing. Even though we were at the front of the hotel overlooking a busy roundabout, we could hear no traffic. There was also no noise from the corridors or other guest rooms, but we were on the business floor, so maybe everyone, like us, wanted to get plenty of sleep and not revel.
Meals - One of the best buffet breakfasts I have seen, with loads of fruit, really fresh pastries and bread, and a huge range of other stuff to suit every breakfast desire. We also had dinner one night in the bistro. This was only OK. My main course, which was listed as a traditional dish, was quite boring. My desert (called mysteriously red grids on the english menu) turned out to be the fruit compote that is served at breakfast with a dollop of custardy stuff in the middle. My husband's "fruit salad", also turned out to be a plate of the sliced of melon and pineapple that is served at breakfast. This was a poor show and we did not have dinner at the hotel a second time.
Overall, I would certainly recommend the hotel, but eat elsewhere.

We were here in July 2007 and loved it. When we booked it came up as a Mystery 5 star Hotel. So we took the plunge and we were really happy with it. We had a lovely spacious room with a view of the Rhine. We found it very convenient as we wanted to do a Rhine cruise and of course the boats were right out the front. Really enjoyed the beach areas (on the river)which were a short walk from the hotel. The weather was hot so we had a fews beers and listened to music there each day. Of course Mainz is a lovely city and there was much to do and see.
The staff were very helpful and friendly. Just a mention, breakfast was included in the price and it was a feast. We sat outside each morning enjoying the view. Wonderful stay. Would definately recommend,

Nicely maintained hotel - inside and out - with larger than average (for Europe) rooms. Windows that open, nice selection of amenities, and a minibar with space for your own stuff. The best thing for us was the proximity to the old town and the vast variety of restaurants and shops only a couple of blocks away. Also a pleasant riverside walkway. The hotel has two wings; I'd advise asking for a room on the river side, not the city side, of Rheinstrasse.
We didn't partake of the Hilton breakfast, preferring an excellent bakery about five minutes away.
Internet charges are a little misleading. You pay 10 Euros for 60 non-continuous minutes, but they appear to add ten minutes to your actual usage every time you sign on. This still looks like a good deal compared to the 24 Euros per day option.
