Decent place, but still needs some work

I was in Richmond for the weekend and chose this hotel based on location. The location is good and is near an upscale neighborhood. The hotel is a bit run down, but is apparently under new management and is undergoing some renovations. The room was fine with a decent bathroom and balcony, but the bed and linens were cheap. The hotel does offer a pillow menu, though. With some improvements (like linens from a Holiday Inn Express) this could be a very nice hotel, and it appears that the new management is starting to turn the property around. Also if you stay there, try out the restaurant across the street named Kitchen 64. It's excellent!

So, this is kinda funny. I'm a travel agent, so I had called a co-worker from the highway to ask her to put me up somewhere cheap and near the highway in Richmond. These guys offered a travel agent rate, so I took it.
Afterwards she said she read these reviews and contemplated calling me to tell me to reconsider.
In the end, it was a fine stay. It's not in the best neighborhood, but it didn't look like a bad one either. To be fair, we do live in a city, so we're probably less offendable than a lot of people.
We drove from MA, so we got in a little after midnight. The woman at the desk was about as frendly as a grocery store cashier, which is fine with me.
I got an accessible room, but I'm not at all sure how a wheelchair bound person would have been able to use the shower. The shower head (which was actually a handheld sort in a little holder) was a good 6ft off the ground. I had to have my husband redirect it for me, since I couldn't reach it.
Beds were comfy, nothing smelled, everything was clean, water was drinkable, and it was close to 95 and 64.
Not the Ritz, but not an Econolodge either.

I agree with the previous negative reviews. The desk clerks were not only rude but also lied to you. We have stayed here previously to attend a Richmond Braves game and therefore are familiar with the property. It was never this bad previously. We had booked an Executive Non-Smoking King bedded room in the Executive Building. We arrived about 1/2 hour before check-in at 3:00PM. I said I would wait for the room. Instead, she wanted to do a bait and switch and provide a cheaper room, which I declined. My husband and I waited in the lobby in front of the desk until she was good and ready to provide the requested room. After, getting the room the no-smoking floor was not enforced. The entire floor stank from cigarette smoke. The breakfast food was OK but the service was very slow. I will avoid this place on our next trip to Richmond.

Staff seems to take pleasure in being rude

I travel all over the country doing trade shows and have, of course, stayed at many hotels. The people at the front desk of this hotel were the rudest, most unhappy clerks I have ever come across. When I was checking in I got a chance to hear the night clerk fighting with another hotel guest. Then a couple nights later I had a run in of my own with the general manager who was as poor mannered as the night clerk. Upon checking out the morning clerk was also shockingly rude. The staff seemed to take pleasure in being rude. My problem was being charged an incorrect room rate and after having called corporate I have now recvd a form letter by email from them saying I'm SOL on the issue. It's great when corporate goes that extra mile to back up their rude employees. P.S. the restaurant food and service is as nasty as the rest of the hotel. Yeesh.

Room was okay, just a little dark. The lobby was nice, and the desk staff were acceptable, but not overly welcoming. The hallways were very shabby and dank, and the area outside the elevator was disgusting, with pools of standing water, leaking ceiling, drenched carpets, and musty smell.
Kids running the hallways all night- school group. Kids in the room across the hall making lots of noise, and knocking on doors randomly for fun. Desk staff said they couldn't do anything. I know there was a chaperone with the group... a phone call to a grown up might have helped.
At 4:00 AM, the fire alarm in the room started beeping because the battery was dead. The friendly desk staff again could do nothing. I disconnected it myself.
Breakfast in the resturant- one work- ick.
The one positive part of my stay? The business center was functional.
