This hotel is a classic Holday Inn, the prices are high for what you get and there is a level of unnessecary pretentiousness with the service. That said the serivce is good and the hotel is comfortable.
The food is OK, but quite highly priced and if you get table service in either the restuarant or the bar a 10% "optional" service charge is added automatically to your bill to cover a 'tip'. To be fair this is advertised in very small print on the menus but I still find this an objectionable practice.
Breakfast is the standard fayre but the quality could be better given the price charged with the sausages being particularly cheap. As with almost all Holiday Inns the toaster either warms the bread with a single pass or cremates it with two.

I stayed here for two nights on a conference but I would have no qualms about booking it for a personal leisure break. The location is terrific - beach, park, historic centre and hovertrips to the Isle of Wight (10 mins) are all within very easy walking distance and . I didn't use the pool but it looked inviting.
The location is relatively quiet but it's still central. I walked from the station (Portsmouth Harbour) since it was such a nice day and I had wheels on my case. The hotel bar and restaurant are spacious. The staff are friendly. The bedroom was fine - not luxurious but it had everything I needed including internet and it wasn't "tired". There may be more upmarket rooms if you are not on a conference deal.

I had already seen the photos of the outside on the website - what a hideous building!!
However, very pleasantly surprised with the room - much nicer than the last Holiday Inn I stayed in (York - a couple of years ago)
Great location - 15 min walk to Gunwharf, couple of mins to the seafront and pubs nearby
Would definitely come back

Very Disappointed with this hotel. Arrived with understanding that had breakfast included in price. Receptionist advised that it wasnt and told us to ring a number which was in Salt Lake City!
Negotiated one free breakfast but was not impressed by hotels attitude at all. It is currently being refurbished but unfortunately this does not include the staff!
Location OK but 10 mins or so walk from anywhere and car park too small!
Try elsewhere!!!

I have just returned from a weekend at the Holiday Inn on Pembroke Road in Portsmouth. The website informed me that they are undergoing a refurbishment to their Bar & Restaurant and I have to say that I was so impressed, I have re-booked again for next month. The staff were really friendly and the service was great. We had dinner in their new restaurant on Friday night and went out to Gunwharf Quays on Saturday. Had a great view from our room overlooking Spinnaker Tower and their location is ideal for local attractions.
Definitely would recommend this hotel.
