We stayed at the Holiday Inn for one night. We didn't find the building exterior off putting and really liked the surrounding lawn and trees. Parking was easy. Our room (double with sofa bed) was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was fine; clean and everything worked. We found the room spacious enough to stay in for the evening using room service, and didn't feel hemmed in at all.
The staff were friendly and helpful. I'd hurt my foot and was limping along with a stick. Staff offered to assist with luggage at check in, and with getting breakfast from the self service counters. Food (we just had room service baguettes and breakfast) was nothing spectacular, but perfectly OK.
All in all, we were very happy with this experience. Excellent value for money (?62 B&B, booked in advance via the hotel's web site) and we would go back.

Lovely weekend spent at this hotel, Staff were so friendly and nothering too much trouble. Breakfast really good selection and hot, being filled up all the time. Had a lovely meal in the restaurant on the Friday night. Compliments to the chef it was wonderful (seafood spaghetti). Sat and watched the rabbits on the lawn in the beautiful garden, chasing one another around.
Don't use your car to go into York, the bus service is the best every. Every 10 mins with a day ticket ?3.50 you can use to jump on and off all buses for the whole day.
All in all a great weekend.

This hotel is near the racecourse, easy to find and well placed for buses into the city. Very friendly staff, clean rooms and excellent service.

The external appearances of this hotel are not good, but things improve once you get inside, unless there's a queue at the desk. The reception area is a little cramped, more than half a dozen people there and you'll be standing outside the door.
The reception staff were excellent. A query with my loyalty card was dealt with efficiently. Travelrug Jr got a goody bag with a disposable camera, scrapbook, stickers and a cool 'do-not-disturb'/'please tidy my room' hanger (Please tidy my room. It wasn't me who made the mess, it was my imaginary friends).
The rooms need a refurb. Tired, scuffed, beaten up. Reasonable size with a double bed & a sofa bed. Small bathroom. No minibar or fridge.
The restaurant staff were helpful, friendly and polite. A complaint was dealt with with speed and sincerity. The food was good.
Great location for the racecourse, or York City centre, an easy 2 mile walk.
The staff make this hotel. They score 4*. The hotel scores 2*. So it's a 3.

A pleasant greeting when I arrived was improved by an upgrade to an executive double because of my platinum priority club membership. The room was quite small, especially the bathroom, but quiet, comfortable and air-conditioned. The 'executive' extras were bottled water, juice and bathrobes - the 'basket of local goodies' promised in a letter handed to me at check-in never appeared! Breakfast was fine - good choice and my preferred decaf coffee and poached eggs both arrived quickly. Absolutely fine for an overnight business trip, but might go elsewhere for more space or facilities if planning for a longer stay or travelling with family.
