60s timewarp in an industrial location.

The building is a bland 1960s slab, of little architectural merit, located in a vast industrial area some distance ($20 cab ride)from Downtown. Its main purpose appears to serve the attached Convention Centre. Arriving off a late flight the reception staff could have been somewhat more welcoming than they were. The room was adequate and clean ,but the bathroom was small and could have been better lit. Coming back to the room at 15.30 one day it had yet to be cleaned and serviced although it had been done a couple of hours later. The restaurant was harshly lit and reminiscent of an industrial canteen - quite unwelcoming, and hence not used. There was a large bar that doubled as a lounge where, of an evening, the same menu as in the restaurant was offered and where most people seemed to eat. However, this room suffered from loud music and a proliferation of massive TV screens. The whole place seemed to be in a sixties timewarp and needing a makeover. As the Convention Centre appears to be starting a building programme perhaps this will also involve the rest of the establishment.

This Holiday Inn is located on the east side of Edmonton, in the middle of a barren industrial area. Do not expect any views from the hotel or anywhere near it, and there is nothing nearby that you can walk to and enjoy. I stayed at this property for three nights to attend meetings held at the hotel.
Here are some of the problems that I encountered at this hotel:
1. The elevators rattle, roll, and jerk like a bad amusement park ride. Expect mild whip-lash.
2. Throughout the lobby areas of the hotel (including the elevators), the latest love songs of the 1970s are constantly piped through the public address system.
3. The televesion in my room always took about 2 minutes to warm up. In those 2 minutes, the TV displayed nothing but psychedelic colorful diagonal lines. The psychedelia show matched well with the 1970s music.
4. My bed had an old fashioned multi-colored bed cover', instead of the new white covers now common at modern hotels. The multi-colored bed sheets matched well with the multi-colored diagonal lines on the TV.
5. The internet connection cable was on top of the dresser; the available power outlet was on the desk. My laptop had to sit on the dresser; my power cable had to dangle across the room to get to the power outlet; and I had to move the desk chair to the front of the dresser to be able to use the laptop. By the way, the power outlet was dangerously hanging out of its housing unit.
6. One of the lobby cleaning crew members thought nothing of vacuuming the meeting room that I was in. While the meeting was taking place.
7. The housecleanning crew thought nothing of banging on my room door to announce that they had arrived to clean the room. At 7:45am in the morning.
On the good side of things, the internet connection worked well and was included in the room rate, parking is plentiful and free, and the staff were generally professional (if a bit on the "we do not smile" side of the personality specrtrum. The Globe and Mail was delivered to the room door, and at least there is a restaurant and a lounge within the hotel, since there is nothing within walking distance outside the hotel.
Overall, a functional hotel suitable only for "I have to stay exactly here" type of occassions. Otherwise, look for alternatives.

This hotel is not at all centrally located, on the contrary it's in a pretty ugly industrial area with few services close by.
The hotel itself is rough around the edges -- peeling wallpaper, stained carpeting and somewhat off-putting overall. Considering that much of this chain has undergone recent renovation, this hotel is overdue.

If you don't have a car, it's almost impossible to get anywhere from here. This hotel is in the middle of nowhere with only the near non-existent hourly public bus to get you anywhere.
They do have a free shuttle to & from the Edmonton (HUGE) mall that you have to book the day before. I used it as a way to get to the mall's bus stop so I could connect to another part of the city and return to the mall by 7pm to get it back to the hotel.
The hotel was very comfortable for the 88 dollars per night I paid. The pool and jacuzzi were decent. They had a nice BBQ party with a band on 8/18/06 on their back patio. (something like 25 bucks all you can eat though I didn't attend)
The restaurant was good for morning breakfast buffets. The staff in the restaurant was friendly as was the front desk staff.
Again, this hotel is FAR from any of Edmonton's attractions! If you don't have a car, you'll have to be crazy like me to do it via the public bus.
