Poor customer service

We stayed for two nights at the Grand Niagara Hotel and Suites - previously Four Pointes (114 Buffalo Ave Niagara Falls New York) - they are in the process of renovating and beware as you will wake up to jack hammers and sandblasting early from Monday - Saturday and continues all day. We received no notice of work upon check in (dark, late at night) and they wouldn't reduce our nightly group rate of $179 plus taxes.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn for one night to have a fun night. I did not stay long enough to give it a more thorough review. Here are some of my thoughts on the hotel.
Hotel: The lobby is nicely decorated although it was quite small. The bar/restaurant looked nice from the lobby but I did not go in.
Staff: The front desk staff was very pleasant and offered quick check in. The cleaning staff was also polite.
Location: The biggest advantage of this hotel is the location. It's proximity to the falls (Canada Side) is very close. It's across the street from the Fallsview Casino which is the great because the resort offers everything you need to be entertained at night.
Room: Beds were quite comfortable and each room had a balcony. Sliding doors could be difficult to open.
Overall: Good hotel if you wish to be near the Fallsview Casino or the falls. Usually you can get a good price here which makes it worthwhile.

We got this hotel for $91/night 6/7-6/9 on Priceline. If it had not been for this deal, this definitely wouldn't have been our first choice.
The exterior of the hotel is outdated. Most interior areas are reasonable updated in contemporary decor. The pool area looked older, but clean. It also looks like they are working on finishing a new (small) workout room. The free gated parking was a plus, and we didn't have trouble finding a spot when we arrived after 12am.
The staff wasn't great, and usually only one person was at the front desk. The restaurant/bar staff was really friendly. We had a problem the first day with our keycards not working. The fire alarms went off the first morning too, but they were just like a bell chime and no one really knew what was going on. There was a lot of confusing and I don't think anyone even left the building. Kind of scary if it'd been an actual emergency.
The location is the best part. It's right up the hill from the falls, and right across from Niagara Casino and other nicer attractions.
We drove to Niagara by the Lake, a beautiful town about 10 miles from the tourist area, and it's recommended to look into staying there instead of right by the falls. There's ten times more to do there than in the tourist trap areas.

Room was clean and comfortable. Great location. Staff was friendly and accomodating. Breakfast buffet not worth the money. Food was cold but service was very nice. Next time, we'll go to one of the buffets or a location that specializes in breakfest. All in all, nice place. Would stay there again.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Holiday Inn By the Falls for 2 nights (Sunday and Monday night) with the Breakation package that includes 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners. The service was really great, all the staff were really friendly and helpful.
We tried to check in early (before 2pm) but our room was not ready which is understandable. The front desk clerk told us it would be ready by 2 pm, so we ate lunch and returned at 2 pm. The room was ready as promised. The room was very clean and tidy. Only disappointment I had was that there was no toothpaste. The front desk carries a little tube of toothpaste which doesn't look or taste like toothpaste.
We had the first dinner at the hotel's restaurant, Coco's, on Sunday night. My boyfriend had the gourmet pizza and I ordered the spare ribs. Both dishes were very good and tasty.
Breakfast on Monday and Tuesday morning was also good, I was pleasantly surprised because hotels tend to make mediocre breakfast food.
On Monday night, we had dinner at the Skylon Tower. The view was incredible, it was a very clear night and the food was fabulous. There was so much food (appetizer, main, dessert) that I couldn't finish it all. My boyfriend had a french onion soup for an appetizer which was the best french onion soup we've ever tasted. I had a garden salad and requested raspberry vinaigrette but they didn't have that dressing. When the waiter brought the salad out, she surprised me by saying the chef made a raspberry vinaigrette special for me. We ended up spending 40 dollars just on 2 drinks and tips but it was worth it for the great service.
Contrary to other reviews, we did not find we got second class treatment because of the special package. Presenting that pink slip to the waiters did not change their behaviour towards us. In fact, one of the waiters commented on what a great deal the package was and they see lots of people coming back each year.
We also used the whirlpool and indoor swimming pool, the temperature of the water was just right and the front desk clerk promptly filled the cupboards with fresh towels when we told her there weren't a lot left.
Perhaps service was better than usual due to the winter season. We definitely recommend this to other young couples who are looking for a quick vacation for a great value during this time of year.
