Room was very clean. Bed was very comfortable. Shower was great. Staff appears not to have changed since the 11/10/07 review.
First of all, DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 1123. We all groan when we get stuck in the room across from the vending and ice machine, but usually it turns out not to be as loud as we expect.
IT IS AT THIS HOTEL. The machines hummed very loudly 5 feet away from our door, and of course then there's crashing noises of the soda and ice dispensation ALL NIGHT LONG. So many times I hit that sweet spot right before drifting off to sleep...CRASH!! ugh
Second, our toilet would run loudly at odd intervals. Appears to have been caulked quite a bit at its base. Known problems?
Third, the darn alarm went off at 6:30 on a Saturday morning.
But what really upset us was the indifference and rudeness of the staff, especially after seeing the placard in the room emphasizing the importance placed upon our happiness.
We told the desk clerk of the problems when we were checking out. She giggled, said sorry, and handed us our bill. A young man standing behind her smirked and said, "That room's been across from the vending machines for 30 years."
And that's all we got. We weren't expecting any freebies--just some empathy.
It left a bad taste in our mouths. We won't be going back. Our problems could be called inconsequential (though it didn't help that we were supposed to be sightseeing the next day but were too sleepy to carry through with all our plans). But what would the hotel do if we had greater problems?
I like to know that the place I am entrusting with my property and myself when I am sleeping cares just a little.

My stay at this hotel was only one of many hotels in the Huntsville area during the past year. It is in a great location, but in desparate need of updating. Formerly a Hilton, it does show some signs of class, but just too dated to matter. I stayed in a non-smoking suite during my visit, and the room was anything but. They brought in some kind of machine that was suppose to take the smoke smell out. It never did, on top of me having to leave my room while this machine was running. Very inconvenient. The shower was lukewarm at best. Brrrrrr!!!! The staff was friendly, and tried to be accomodating. Next stay in downtown will be at the Embassy, but register in advance as it seems to book quickly. Especially if you want a king bed.

I stayed here from 11/5 - 11/9 for a conference. The Holiday Inn was the "official" conference hotel because it accepted the government per diem rate. There were 700+ registrants for the conference, so the Holiday Inn downtown was booked to capacity.
My room (king bed, n/s) was clean, but had an ash tray in the drawer below the TV. In addition, the administration offices just down the hall from my room were constantly filled with smoke. The Holiday Inn chain should seriously consider banning smoking like their competitors at Marriott.
The bed & linens were comfortable. The bathroom, while clean, was very small and in a rather poor state of repair - the counter and fixtures are worn and slightly damaged. Worse, the only day I got a hot shower was the day I left - but only because I was up at 3:45AM. Every other day was lukewarm at best. My colleagues and other conference participants reported similar experiences.
The staff was indifferent. I made the mistake on two occasions of asking for directions to various nearby locations. The staff acted as if I were a nuisance. Eventually, I was handed a photocopy of a hand-drawn map of the downtown area and given general instructions. When I went to check out at 4:30AM, I had to wake up the desk clerk.
The exercise room contains 2 treadmills, a stationary bike, an inoperable elliptical machine, and 4 weight lifting stations.
If you're coming to Huntsville for an event at the Von Braun Center, I strongly recommend the Embassy Suites across the street.

Arrived Sat Aug 11 for 1 night. Room #2373 was nice, comfortable and clean. Bathroom is a little small, but adequate. There is no balcony and the windows don't open. Also no refrigerator in the room.
The area around the hotel is nice - a little park w/lake across the street. Nothing to eat/drink within walking distance. I noticed a hotel shuttle parked out front, but I didn't use it or ask the details.
The food at the hotel was OK - I had chicken fingers at the bar and the breakfast buffet. On my way out Sat night, I noticed a bowl of fresh baked cookies on the front desk - all kinds - very nice treat.
The staff was not very friendly - the front-desk person (Svelva- sp) never made eye contact or smiled at us at check-in. The bartender (Anthony) was very aloof - never said a word, just poured drinks.
Probably wouldn't stay here again - there is an Embassy Suites across the street w/a Ruth's Chris attached - I would probably stay there next time.
