Tired hotel that feels more like suburban NYC than small town Elmira

This hotel has seen better days. It had a musty, stale smoke smell. Despite daily reminders, housekeeping failed to properly restock our room each day. (The front desk staff, however, were helpful.) The A/C cycled on and off throughout the night. The breakfast buffet is mediocre and understocked. The pool was closed one day by, I believe, the health department. On the plus side, the beer in the lounge was cheap!

We were going to Horseheads to a 4H horse competition with our daughter. Last year we stayed at the economy Landmark Motel and were very unhappy. I decided to upgrade to a Holiday Inn this year. I first tried to book the Holiday Inn Express but they were swamped with Elmira College parents already. I was able to get two nights at the Riverview. Our experience was just terrible. We arrived late (10pm) after setting up at the Horse show. My guaranteed reservation was for a non-smoking room with two double beds. We were provided a clear smoking room, room 140. A quick call to the desk resolved the problem. They said that there must have been a smoker in there and the room was supposed to be non-smoking. One girl went and checked the next room, 208 to verify it had clear air. We entered the room and were satisfied with the clean non-odored air. Time to hit the sack and guess what? The mattress and box springs had to be 30 years old. They were the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. They might have worked for a single person but when you put two people in the bed you are rolling one way or the other. In the morning when my wife showered she found the towel (last one) had a large brown stain on the corner. For the $135 we paid for the room They certainly could have replaced the towels. I'm sure the nearby motel 6 had nice towels at $60 an night. After that night we just checked out as I was sure that the desk could not provide new Mattresses. I also did not like the nightclub attached to the lobby with NY smoking laws I had to walk around bar patrons to check in. No continental breakfast either. Stay at the Holiday Inn Express or somewhere else with a newer building. As I said the staff was nice and tried to help. But I only give one chance. I am not staying up all night, moving around rooms until they find one that works.
