Booked hotel via a secondary provider and asked for non-smoking room but was told there was not one available. They did go to the room and “cleaned” the air with a portable ionization machine – this took about 1 hour but the room smelled less of smoke after this was completed. I waited in the lobby while the air was cleaned (10:00 PM) and a man approached me and told me he was living in his car with his wife and 2 kids and asked me for money. This is the first time this has ever happened to me in a hotel lobby but I was in Newark New Jersey. The hotel is old and a bit run down especially for a Hilton. However, the staff was very responsive and considerate. Once I told the front desk about the “request for money” 3 or 4 security guards appeared at each stood in front of a door into the hotel. The hotel staff was much better than the hotel condition. My room was clean but very warn-out and needed renovation.

I stayed here to connect with an early morning flight and because I was travelling with my dog and they allowed animals. They also have a free shuttle bus that is operating 24/7 (or was back then).
It is a beautiful hotel. Staff were very friendly and efficient. However, the location is VERY dodgy. On the front side it is bordered by a highway, and on the other sides a graveyeard, parking lot and beyond that, a really sketchy area. I didn't really feel very safe walking my dog there and was followed around by a man. It was a good place to stay based on proximity to the airport, animal poilicy, shuttle and price. But, again, not a great area.

Terrible experience with shuttle, and for an airport hotel, that's a pretty big problem.
The problem is in their business processes. Specifically, they leave the garage to run the shuttle independently with little oversight or interaction from other areas of the hotel, and if those guys are not on their job, there is no accountability for them.
Why do I say this? Because every time you call them to request the shuttle their response is "I'll transfer you to the garage". Even if you have already been waiting 35 minutes for the "every 20 minute shuttle" and have already called twice, they still just transfer you to the garage so someone can "help" you.
No apologies, no explanation, more importantly, no concern or offer to help. Nope, just transfer me to the garage, where it is clear that somebody is not doing his job and that that somebody's friend is covering for them. So, poor management.
The most annoying part of all of it is that the hotel is only three or four minutes from the airport when there's not traffic, so we could have walked there and back in the time that we spent waiting.
In all, it convinced me to stay at the Sheraton or Marriott the next time I'm in the area, and to not investigate switching from Starwoods any time soon.

I grew up in Northern New Jersey near Manhattan so I know what the Newark Elizabeth area is like. The area the hotel is in is what I expected--a somewhat rundown industrial area-- but the hotel is much nicer than I had expected. Any hotel near Newark Airport is going to look out over old industry and run down areas. We stayed there the night before our plane left for Pittsburgh. I assumed this was a hotel used as a jumping off point for people arriving and departing from the airport so I didn't expect much.
The hotel has just been recently renovated. I suspect this means the reviews will start to get better too until the heavy foot traffic of a busy hotel wears it down again in a few years. The check in was very easy and courteous. Our room was bigger than ti expected with a king bed and a large desk plus a small round table with two chairs and a fair amount of floor space. Not quite as large as a 2 room suite but not much smaller. We went down to the bar lounge area and had crabcakes which were very good and wine and then headed back to the room and watched a movie on the movie channel.
Like all Hilton hotels the bed and pillows were very comfortable.
If you are expecting Newark to look like Manhattan or that this is going to be like a resort Hilton style hotel than you may be dissapointed. But if you are looking for a nice hotel that is comfortable and quiet and close to the airport for arrivals and departures this is a very reasonable place to stay.
