Lets start by saying that the hotel is undergoing renovations. Unfortunately, the renovations are still a LONG way from being complete. The room we were in (on the 11th floor) had water spots all over the ceiling, a terribly stained bathtub, a defective light and wallpaper that was beginning to peel. For the first 2 days of our stay we didnt even have bath towels, only hand towels and wash clothes. The only redeeming qualities that the Hilton had was the staff. The bellhops, housekeeping and wait staff were all very courteous and tried to make our stay pleasant. We even needed to have a young lady from housekeeping let us into our room on the last day when we found that our room cards were already deactivated! (we overheard another party in the lobby complaining of the same thing). All in all, the hotel was not up to standards and I would recommend that others look eleswhere for a place to stay. Atleast until they renovate the hotel into something tollerable.

I've stayed in Savannah so many times, I can practically walk it with my eyes closed. I usually stay at the excellent Catherine Ward House Guest Inn, but this time I took a chance on the Hilton Desoto to save a iittle money. What a mistake.
Do NOT book here unless you have called the hotel to confirm that all renovation is complete. They booked me on the 4th floor. I discovered that the entire 5th floor was being gutted, so the jackhammers and saws started pretty early. Even on my own floor, the rooms on each side of me were being renovated. One night, I was kept awake from midnight to 1:30 a.m. by plumbers, most of whom stood in the hall and talked on walkie-talkies!
The phone in the room didn't work, either.
I'm sure once the renovations are complete, this will be a perfectly fine place to stay. It IS within walking distance of EVERYTHING. But call before booking.

This hotel was much better than the reviews. Yes, they are redoing the entire hotel, but the staff was excellent. We were on the 9th floor and had a great view of the City. It was easy to self-park. The staff was always helpful. I would stay here again and do recommend this hotel.

I read the reviews and decided that if it was THAT bad, we would leave and stay elsewhere.
1. We were going to spend the 4th of July weekend in Savannah
2. I paid $139 a night for an upgraded room (12th floor with balcony) that included a Serta-Sleeper mattress, king-size bed, continental breakfast, conceirege lounge access at night
Upon arrival, we pulled up by the valet stand to figure out where the self-parking was. Not a problem - nice people to direct us.
Check-in was painless and quick, we were in our room within 10 minutes of walking into the hotel.
The room was clean, nice, and had all the amenities I am used to with the Hilton chain. Balcony on the 12th floor allowed us to view all of the historic district from the room (that was important later!).
We went to the 13th floor concierge lounge for hor-douvers (can you tell I can't speak or spell 'French'? :) and the $2 cocktails. We met the concierge (Keith) who gave us the birds-eye view of the historic district and recommended several restaurants for the evening. We had a ball the first night in town.
Breakfast - in the 13th floor lounge was not taken advantage of because it is about 12 foot by 14 foot with 6 tables and there were no less than 30 people in there already. We didn't use that area again in the mornings. We walked outside and asked the valet for a place to eat breakfast -- "Clary's" was the answer and it was two blocks (about) away. Historic stuff along the way and Clary's was a goldmine for good food. It was also featured prominently in the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".
Hotel service was excellent at all times. They ran out of towels at the pool. I called the front desk and not only were there towels brought down, they walked among the pool deck and handed them to us so we didn't have to go 'grab' them with everyone else.
Room was excellent - maid service was excellent - concierge was excellent. We will be going back and I will specifically request the 12th floor facing the historic district. On the eve of the 4th of July, we elected NOT to go to the River Street and watch the fireworks with several thousands of people. We had a cooler, two lawn chairs, beers and sandwiches on the balcony and watched the show from there - excellent choice for the 4th of July. We're going back again next year and we're going to stay at the DeSoto Hilton ----

The staff here was friendly, but, man, what a tired hotel. Hasn't been updated in decades. For a business traveler or just a bed for the night, it's fine, but if you're trying to have a leisurely, coddled stay in Savannah, I'd go elsewhere.
