Best location for Centre Ville, where most of the action is: fronts Place Victor Hugo, a lively park; it's an easy walk (12 - 15 min) to the train station (or two tram stops, about 6 min); it's on major bus and tram routes; Place Grenette, a major gathering place, is just behind the hotel.
We booked using the hotel website but could not get the senior's (pensionnaire's) rate that way -- it was advertised on the site but there was no means to select it. At the hotel we were told we had to stick with the higher rate we'd booked. Later we tried again with another desk clerk and got the much lower senior's rate, including half-price for the weekend. So be persistent. Some of the staff may be more accommodating than others.
We stayed in room 111, a good-sized corner room with a large bathroom (and bathtub). The bedroom faces a small parking lot, the bathroom faces Eglise St. Louis, just behind the hotel. (Not all rooms have baths, however.) It's a fairly quiet room, but you hear the church bells toll the hours (they stop at midnight, start again a 6 AM); and you get thrilling bell tower concerts announcing mass on Sunday morning and afternoon. Room 111 has a small refrigerator for bar offerings, but there's little room for your own stuff, such as bottled juices from the nearby Monoprix store.
P.S. McDonalds, is on Place Grenette, about 60 yards away, if you miss your Egg McMuffins for breakfast. (Google maps has trouble locating it precisely, but it's there.)

Be careful when booking a stay at this hotel. There seems to be a number of different websites that you can book through that are operated by both the hotel and the Golden Tulip chain itself, all offering different prices, charges and options. We choose to book through the Golden Tulip main website and pay upfront for our room. This worked out at ?85 per night. Breakfast is extra.
We were staying in this hotel for one night then moving on to Annecy and then coming back to this hotel for two nights.
Our first nights stay was in room 104. This was called a medium room but it was tiny. Two people couldn't pass bye each other in the room. It had an extremeny noisy air conditioning system that was controlled by the hotel. You could switch it on or off in the room but that was about it. The noise was horrendous. Our room was on the first floor overlooking a park but also a noisy street. There were tea and coffee facilities in the pleasantly decorated room. The bathroom was tiny and needed some circus training to get in and out of the half bath. It was impossible to do this without brushing against the toilrt. Ugh! The towels were of a good quality and lots of shampoos etc.
When we were leaving after our first night we complained about the size of our room and we were told that we could have a bigger room if we paid more money.
On our return two days later we were given room 101. This room was better laid out with the toilet area separate from the bathroom. The room was still small however. We choose to sleep with the window open than listen to the jet engine noise of the airconditioning.
The hotel is very well located. I thought that it was overpriced for what we got. If you can get one of their special weekend offers of two nights for the price of one it would be about acceptable. Grenoble is a nice city, worth a couple of days exploration.

I read the reviews before we went & e-mailed for 4 rooms on the 4th floor - received an immediate 'it's done!' We arrived on the Friday night and the rooms, although small were good enough for us as we were out every day. The views from the balconies were fantastic though! We bought breakfast in Grenoble each day from patisseries and ate them in one of the small squares in a cafe with a coffee, which a French woman advised us to do. The squares had markets on the saturday & sunday mornings which made for a great atmosphere.
A good tip for this hotel is to buy the 3 nights for 2 over the weekend, you will find it on the hotel website.
Overall I would advise people like us to go to this hotel ie don't need to spend loads of time in it. It has great service, a lovely view from the 4th floor to wake up to and come into at the end of the night and although small is still comfortable.

This hotel is across the street from a central park in Grenoble, a lovely city in the Alps. The location made our stay very pleasant. But the hotel is drastically overpriced and the difference between a double room and a luxury room is about two inches and twenty euros. Our Paris hotel, across from the Luxemburg Gardens, was the same amount of space at half the price.
