Very handy position on the outer ring of the town. We arrived by train and took a short taxi ride to get there. It is across the river and too far to walk with luggage. Cost was 8 euro. Very friendly taxi driver who spoke English.
Very easy walk to town centre.
Very clean, good size rooms. Staff were friendly and we could leave our luggage at reception as we arrived early. Nice garden outlook.
The hotel had free parking in the area in front, quite safe. The brekafast was a nice buffet at resonable cost. Quite a few coach tours seem to use this hotel but it had no effect on our stay.
Good value for passing travellers.

Was really looking forward to my stay at this hotel given their website info and the reviews here. When we booked we were told the only rooms available were deluxe rooms for 95e. There were nothing deluxe about this room. It was a good size but zero amenities besides 2 beds (actually one was a chaise lounge which they called a bed and not so comfortable for age 55). The bath towels were the size of hand towels and scratchy. No minibar or hot water maker as is customary in other similar properties in small towns of France, no view, furnishings a la motel 6, bathroom "amenities" a joke, nothing in the room more than the minimum. I don't know how they consider this room (9b) deluxe--way overpriced for 95e. During our one night stay we saw only 3-4 other guests, hotels was rather quiet and I highly doubt only this deluxe room was available.
Saw no need for their hyped 6e garage parking. Safe and plentiful parking in front of the hotel.
Beware of the internet--I downloaded a virus even though I have a firewall and antivirus software installed in my laptop.
Auxerre is an adorable town. Try not to arrive on a Sunday night though as nearly EVERYTHING in town in closed Sunday and Monday morning. Square is a pleasant 15 min walk from the hotel. The front desk staff recommended a brasserie near the square called La Taverne De Ma?tre Kanter. By all means--stay away from this for more than a beer. We ordered 4-5 small dishes and not one was edible. (gratinee onion soup with vinegar???). Try the restaurant on the south side of the square--it can't be worse than this. Those were the only restaurants we saw open Sunday night (besides a Michelin $$ across from the hotel) however upon walking home after dinner the chinese and japanese restaurants a few doors down from the hotel were open.
Sad to have to provide such a review but the Hotel Normandie is only to be had if there are no other options.

This is a good, comfortable hotel, well priced and clean, in walking distance to sites and restaurants in Auxerre. We stayed five nights this summer, using the hotel as a base for traveling all around Burgundy. Rooms are a good size and, at least the ones we had, were outfitted with bath and shower. Step up from a large chain. Staff were helpful and friendly.

We booked this hotel after reading the review in the Lonely Planet and were dissapointed by both the hotel and the town. Having come from a charming, small, country hotel it was really dissapointing to stay somewhere really lacking in charm. The rooms were fine and clean and had a TV, but felt a little souless. The underground parking was an extra 6.50 euros, and though you could walk into Auxerre, the town was nothing special and the restaurants a bit uninspiring.
