We stayed at the hotel Rio Athens in June 2008. This hotel is absolutely the best choice in Athens. Clean and near the city attractions. Just few steps away to the subway, (metro station METAXOURGHIO).
The staff was polite and made us feel at home and a great assistance for touring Athens. Buffet Breakfast was delicious.
We surely recommend this hotel to others.

It begins with a rude receptionist with terrible phone manners who is impatient and hangs up on you. Location is dull with boozy characters outside in daytime. Takes half hour by taxi from Sintagma - much too long. Staff is awful. Service is awful. Friendliness does not exist. Ugly lobby. Terrible rooms. You can do better at the Sintagma hotels. Not so cheap either. They wanted 85e a night. Next day I returned to Sintagma and stayed at Pan Hotel for 60e a night in a much better room and location. Try harder to find something else. PS it is not a GAY hotel. Although they advertise in Gay listings, they are far from gay friendly.

We booked the hotel Rio when we goit overbooked by the City Plaza, and through the website we thought it would be a good option. The hotel is lovely family run business in a 'not so great part' of athens BUT only 3 stops on the metro til the centre of everything and the Acroplis (around 5 minutes), the front of the hotel has been cornered off to make an outside cafe and bar area, the food is GREAT really lovely, but drinks overpriced - beer at 5.50 euros, sprits at 8.50 euros. The rooms are very clean and the beds and towels changed every day. The rooms are a great place to lay your head and have a base from to explore Athens - which is a fantastic city - but the hotel has 41 rooms and only 18 front windows - the rest either overlook the building either side or open out to the interior of the hotel the staff are friendly and happy to help but the breakfast is really basic - cheese, Ham, Bread and cold Coffee and Tea - let it down. Overall for the price of the hotel is a good, clean, friendly and a great place to see Athens from - if you want room service, a View from the hotel and to spend more time 'enjoying' your hotel other then sightseeing this may not be for you.

Hotel Rio is a moderately priced small hotel in north central Athens. Convenient to the subway, one can easily get to most attractions. Rooms are pretty small, but adequate. The nice thing is that the "street" is really a court, with no cars on it. Thus, it is quieter than other hotels in the city.
Ms. Seda, Nikos, Alexandra and Michali were all very pleaseant and helpful
