We recently returned from a 3 night stay here. The location of the hotel is down various backstreets that get increasingly smaller! Although just off one of the piazzas, the hotel was very quiet. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, whether it was recommending a restaurant, providing a coffee before bedtime, or storing our case on the day of departure.
We paid 20 euros extra per night to get a room with a small balcony, so we had a room on the 4th floor with a view of the hills behind Bologna. The roof terrace on 5th floor looked great, and I imagine it would be enjoyable sitting up there with a drink later on in the summer.
If you want a good old-fashioned trattoria, try Trattoria Trebbi on Via Solferino. They have a fantastic buffet. It's not posh at all, looks like someone's old dining room. It would be helpful if you speak Italian, but we muddled through. The tiramisu is fantastic!

During our two-week stay in Italy, we had generally good hotel experiences, but none as great as at the Hotel Touring in Bologna. The location was fine, the hotel itself (the room, the rooftop garden, the courtyard and breakfast room) were all really nice, but the staff was exceptional. All of the front desk people made us feel welcomed like guests in their home. They were helpful with restaurant recommendations, directions and all sorts of advice and help. We recommend this hotel highly and plan to return for a longer stay next time.

My husband and I were only in Bologna for one night as we really just wanted to have a break from crowds between Venice and Florence. The hotel was in a fine location (a little off the beaten path), was very clean and modern, and had a very friendly desk staff. We never asked for any extras so I can't comment on the additional charges mentioned in other reviews, but I can say we never witnessed any arguments at the front desk. Our only request was a dinner reservation, and this was met with a smile and a prompt phone call.
My only complaints would probably be the lack of A/C. Since we were there in May, we didn't have A/C in any of our hotels for the whole 2 weeks. The problem with this particular hotel was that our room overlooked a square shared on 3 sides by an apartment complex. As Bologna is a college town and we were there on a Saturday night, there was a lot of noise to contend with if we wanted our windows open. I know they can't control the noise of others though so please don't think I'm completely irrational. My other complaint and the reason I gave them 4 rather than 5 is that I just felt it was overpriced for what I got. Bologna isn't a huge tourist attraction. It was a great stopover to avoid crowds, but I just didn't feel like I go my money's worth. This was my most expensive hotel at 149 Euros and while it was clean and more modern than most, it wasn't extraordinary nor was it the best place we stayed.
I would definitely consider staying here again, but I would probably shop around a little first to see if I could find anything closer in for a better price.
