The hotel is in a very convenient location. On arrival they seemed to have lost our booking, but managed to find us a room. Unfotunately, the plumbing was somewhat erratic, we got covered in water running a bath, and then the plug got jammed. Initially they were unkeen to do anything about it until morning, and needed some persuasion at the front desk.
The bed was comfortable, and breakfast on the roof terrace was good, with good service. The front desk in the morning was very helpful about our onward travel arrangements. All in all, a good hotel, but with variable (OK to good) service.

A good choice in Messina

The Grand Liberty is comfortable, clean, quiet and reasonably priced. The desk staff was helpful, with restaurant recommendations and tips on travel to the Eolian Islands. The hotel is located near the main rail station in Messina. The area right around the hotel is not the best, but there are nice piazzas and shopping streets located within a few blocks of the hotel.

A nice hotel, but it's really geared much more towards Conferences than tourists / romantic breaks (as evidenced when we went to breakfast and inadvertently walked into one...). The hotel is ideally located for the train station though (a few mins walk) and the rooms are clean. Made a good base for our day trip to Messina.

I stayed at the Grand Hotel Liberty on conference business for five nights in May. It is an elegant, well-refurbished and compact establishment in a side street in downtown Messina.
The superior rooms are pleasant enough to live in, although it was not possible to get the air conditioning down to an appropriate level. Service is very helpful (although you might double-check the information if they quote you bus times to Palermo - I missed an infrequent connection because of this).
The hotel serves breakfast, but at 7am you may well want to ask them to turn down the awful pop music. For other meals you will need to head into town or visit the nearby sister hotel, the Royal Palace. Good food and service in the restaurant there, but attention rather slow in the bar below.
Beware the free computer terminal in the lobby of the Liberty. Very handy, of course - but very popular with mosquitos on my visit, even in May!
The location places you a tram ride from the centre of town, about 15 minutes away by foot. You are next to the railway station, on the main lines between Palermo, Catania and the mainland (although the long distance trains often run exceptionally late and finding a seat to Palmero, even with a ticket, proved impossible for me).
You are also very close to the departure point for the 2-hour bus ride to Catania airport (an enjoyable ride down through Taormina and past Etna). You are near the ferries across the straits and within 50 minutes of the boats out to the Aeolian islands.
