An excellent base for Colgone

I returned yesterday from a 4 night stay at the Central Am Dom. I have read the other reviews and feel I was lucky with my experience as this hotel was an excellent base for us to admire the beautiful city of Cologne from.
Our room was a double which had sufficient space for 2 people, a wardrobe, desk with tea/coffee making facilities, TV, phone, 2 chairs, a reasonably priced mini-bar and a bathroom with shower, hairdryer, soap and shampoo sachets and towels. The room was cleaned daily, towels and sheets replaced when necessary. The view from our room was towards a small, quiet square containg the St Andreas church and the Deutsche bank and directly above the bar/restaurant of the hotel. We also seemed to have the largest window with 2 panels which opened widely and allowed us to keep cool away from the noise of the street at the front of the hotel.
The reception area was always clean and staff always pleasant. They provide a locked storage area for your suitcases on your last day allowing us to make the most of our enitre stay.
The breakfast was better than I expected, the buffet was served 7 - 10am (7 -11 am sat/sun) and included scrambled and boiled eggs, bacon, a variety of breads and condiments, plates of cheese and meats, cornflakes/muesli, fruit sald and drinks. The waiting staff were friendly enough, efficient and everything was kept well stocked. We never struggled for anywhere to sit
The location was excellent, a 1 minute walk would have you stood viewing the beautiful Cologne Cathedral or next to the main Cologne train station.
I booked this room after an internet search and paid 260 euros for the room for 4 nights. With 2 of us staying in the room, I think we got good value for money and we found an ideal base from which to explore and appreciate Cologne.
The bar/restaurant downstairs (Bankers) is separate to the hotel but it is excellent. I recommend a visit here for dinner and drinks even if you do not stay at the hotel. The staff are very friendly, the food is excellent with a good variety on the menu as well as daily specials, the beer is decently priced and the cocktails are excellent...particularly during happy hour when they are reduced! Indoor and outodoor seating is available and they had a large TV on which they showed the World Cup games.

Schlimmstes Hotelerlebnis

I had some experience with this hotel last weekend, as I came to Cologne to watch the Ukraine vs. Switzerland game. HRS only provided a possibility to book it for Sunday, but I had to stay for two, so I booked my room for Monday for the counter price of 100 EUR. This was quite a lot for a room, which made me afraid I would become claustrophobic. It was indeed very small and hot, for it had no air conditioner. Neither had it looked like the pictures I saw on the HRS web-site. Nevertheless, I accepted the price for an additional day, just not to change the hotel during my stay. It was funny to see that the corridor in the ground-floor was combined with a Chinese restaurant. Every time I went to my room, I saw waiters and cooks there. But that was ok with me.
However what I really didn’t like about the hotel is the attitude of the staff. Once I came to the hotel at 3am with my girlfriend. She was on a business trip and her company arranged a room for her at Hilton, which within half a minute of walking from the place. That was the main reason I looked for the closest hotel. The guy at the reception desk categorically told me the room I stayed at was for one person and that she couldn’t come in. Saying she has already visited me during the day and there had been no problem about it didn’t work. I felt myself like I was at a student dormitory somewhere in the Soviet Union, where they used to close the entrance at the midnight so that no one can enter or exit the building. Finally we got tired of arguing and went to Hilton where no one tried to explain us how many people are allowed to stay in her room. Maybe I don’t understand something about the hotels, but I have never had such a problem before. Everywhere I could have as many visitors as I wanted to. I will definitely not book this hotel next time I go to Cologne.
