During our trip to Ireland and France, we booked a one-night stay at this hotel because we were coming in from Dublin and needed a night's rest before heading east for the country. This was nevertheless our first experience in Paris, and I thank God that we booked the Beagency down in the Rue Cler area for the rest of our stay after returning from the country because they made it a miserable experience. We came into Paris on a 90-something degree day hot, exhausted and starving only to pay 20 bucks for a cab that couldn't find the hotel. We were pretty disappointed with "Paris" as we circled the Place de la Republique trying to find the hotel because it's not in a very nice neighborhood--dirty & adorned with graffiti is something I can see via subway here in NY for a lot cheaper--and we found the people to be largely unfriendly. Upon finally finding the hotel, the concierge was the quintessential rude Frenchman who was asking me look for and fill out several forms at once while he lost his patience with me. While shuffling all my stuff around trying to give him all the paperwork and whatnot, some random French girl was standing next to us at the desk waiting for God-knows-what, and she started making fun of us (Americans) in French, saying that we would be complaining pretty soon along with some other comments that were difficult for me to translate. We were afraid that all the rumors were true about nasty, conceited Parisiennes, but were happily surprised by the way we were treated outside of this hotel and its surrounding neighborhood. The room itself was clean, cramped, and hot. We had a balcony, which we liked, but that was about it. It's certainly not on a par with the other 3-star hotel we stayed in. We had the breakfast the next morning for over 9 euro per person, and the food was a total disappointment--stale croissants & muddy coffee in Paris are simply unforgivable given the competition. There are a lot of good hotels in Paris--stay at another one.

We had booked our wedding anniversary trip to Paris months ago. We paid via Alpha Rooms to stay at the Le Relais du Marais. However after arriving at that hotel at 8 pm. We were told that they had suffered a flood but booked us into another hotel close by. We were not happy but I think it worked out OK and it was not their fault, these things happen. On arriving at the Repunlique very tired and a little despondent at getting moved. The staff here were very friendly and pleasant. They spoke excellent English if needed. The lobby was more welcoming than the original hotel. Onto our room on the top floor. Clean and tidy. Not to small apart from the bathroom (reduced size bath). To be hyper critical there were a few cracks in the walls and the place could do with a refurb. But it was as I said clean, not smelly and even had a fridge! The bed was reasonably comfortable. All in all a good base and as others said very close to the metro. I would stay there again if I went to this area. But after seeing most of the major sights I would try the Notre Dam area. But would probably pay a fortune for it!! There are some great place to eat locally. We ate one night at the Italian called Maya. Great food and service at a reasonable 50 euros for drinks and 2 courses. The best was Chez Jenny. Approx 10 minute walk from the hotel. Fantastic food and wine. The service was 5 star. We had a bottle of wine, beer, three courses and coffee for 120 euros. Not cheap but well worth it in a great restaurant.

We booked this hotel together with Eurostar through Thomson, who made the booking on our behalf through Cresta Holidays. Some of our party were going to see the Rugby World Cup so even though we booked back in April the choice was very limited so this was about the only place that all 6 of us could stay for a reasonable price. On reading the reviews on here we were very worried about staying here as people either loved it or hated it, but we loved it, we arrived at about midnight and the night porter was brilliant, very friendly, laughed at our very poor french and made us say our room numbers in french before we were allowed the keys! He also warned us 'no french, no breakfast!!' so it got the break off to an excellent start - in fact all the staff at the hotel we had contact with were equally friendly, English was very good (much needed as our French was poor!) and they appreciated us trying French!! On to the rooms - they were basic but very comfortable - 2 couples had rooms 302 and 304, which were small but had a small wardrobe (plenty of space to hang clothes as we only stayed 3 nights), a desk with mini-bar underneath and TV above, 2 small chairs, a small double bed (very comfortable bed compared to many hotels I have stayed in) and a little ensuite with a shower over the bath which was an excellent shower, not the trickle you usually get in large hotels! The other couple stayed in room 405 on the next floor up and the only difference was they had a shower cubicle and no bath, which was very small for the average person, let alone someone over 6ft but that was the only downside! The hotel is situated on a very busy roundabout (Place de Republique) which is extremely busy all day and all night, hence the complaints of noise. The hotel was very warm when we arrived and opening the windows did mean we heard a lot of traffic noise - the weather was about 25degrees each day we stayed, so we opened the windows first thing in the morning which cooled the room down a lot, then kept the curtains drawn and windows open all day while we were out, and then didn't shut them until we went to sleep which meant the room was lovely and cool and compared to the traffic noise with the window open, sounded silent! There is a metro stop literally on the pavement outside the hotel, a nice bar/cafe with pavement tables either side, and several little restaurants around - Pizza Pico and Indiana were both very nice (left out of the hotel past the fast food restaurants). Metro was 1euro50 for a single journey, which worked out cheaper than the daily travelcard of 5euro60 as we usually used a max of 3 single journeys a day - very good transport, not a single delay, trains every 2 mins, busy at rush hour but as expected, could still get on the train and usually get a seat, extremely cheap for the excellent service, it really puts London transport to shame!! The breakfast at the hotel came included with our booking - it consisted of tea/coffee/hot choc, croissants and various other pastires, baguettes, bread, jam, cheese, choc spread etc, cereal and fruit juice - nothing fancy but filled us up fine for the day ahead, if breakfast isn't included in your booking probably better to go to one of the little pavement cafes for more variety. Overall an excellent hotel for the price paid, right in the centre of Paris - if you're used to 5* hotels then it probably will be too small and noisy for you, but if you want a well run, central hotel in Paris for a fair price and are used to staying in 3*'s you should be very happy staying here - it is a lot better than some of the one's in England I've stayed in.

I am not sure who gave this three stars, but I assume they were previously homeless and it was their first day on the job. Or maybe in 1979 it was all modern and impressive, but I am sure it was never larger. The size, even for Europe is claustrophobic. The shower recess will not accomodate a full grown adult. The rumbling trains of the Metro will remind you that you are close to transport and all this did not come cheaply. I have stayed since at 4 star hotels that are so far ahead in class, I have to assume they have stolen the 3 star plaque that adorns their front doore from someone else.

The rooms were dingy and overpriced. The staff was completely unhelpful. We had to cancel our first night at the hotel because our flight from London was cancelled. Even though we stayed an extra night, we were still charged for the night we unable to come. To make matters worse, one of the managers told us that they gave our bigger room away without asking because they thought we would want to save 15 euros since we had to pay for our cancelled night. We were never allowed to speak to the head manager.
