The great surprise is of this hotel is to place a modern hotel inside the walls of an old (and beautiful city). However, it fits the architecture and doesn't spoil the place.
It is like 10 minutes walking distance away from the GIRALDO SQUARE, so it is a great starting point to discover ?vora - you can park you car in the spacious underground garage and visits Evora by foot (it is not easy to park inside the city).
I got a room to the back of the hotel, in the first floor, what is great, becasue it had a big balcony facing the pool and the wall of the city. Other big surprise is the pool and tit's surroundings. It is not a small pool, like I would expect from an hotel inside such an old city, it is a very beautifull pool, surrounded by a well taken of garden, where you can really enjoy a good bath and an afternoon of sun bathing.
The rooms themselves have nothing particular about: simple 4 star hotel rooms, modern and clean, but not luxurious. However, it's not easy to find this inside an old townn, and this is the big plus of this hotel: modern confort in an historic city.

Finding a good hotel in Evora is not that easy. However we can recommend da Cartuxa. The location is excellent. Just within the ancient city walls (which you can see from your room towards the back of the hotel grounds) and a close walk to the city center. Staff is very friendly and makes you feel welcome. The hotel itself is nice, especially the lawns and pool, alhough nothing spectacular. The hotel also seems to be frequented by small tour groups. Breakfast offered sufficient variety of choices.
Evora itself is a real gem and one of the prettiest old towns on the Iberian peninsula. You can walk for hours in the small streets and plaza's, reminiscent of old glory.

A Good Place to Stay and have Dinner in Evora

Only spent 1 night here enroute between Lisboa and Sevilla, but it was enjoyable. Good location just inside the city walls. Easy access for drivers, and Hotel garage parking was very convenient, and nearly empty. Uphill, but easy walking to all the sites. This Hotel is certainly older, and shows its age at times (like the bathroom plumbing fixtures), but we had a very spacious room with a king size bed and were completely comfortable. We got to Evora about 1330, and were checked in right away. There were no tour groups at the hotel, so we had the place nearly to ourselves. We saw a tour group was expected the day we left, so good timing on our part!
Highlight of the hotel was the restaurant. We mostly ate there because by 1930 we were too tired to walk uphill again, but it was a great choice. We had a wonderful dinner with the best freshly-baked olive bread ever. We were also well pleased with the breakfast buffet the next morning. There were so many selections (plenty of fruit, juices, breads, meat, cheese, pastries, cereal, hot foods, and cakes), it was difficult to decide.
The staff was a bit more formal here than elsewhere in Portugal, but we had a great stay with no problems at all.

Nice hotel, booked it because of all of the other reviews that I read here. However, nothing spectacular to write about. Arrived an hour early (13.00 hours), but couldn't be booked in until 14.00 hours. Come on!!. Breakfasts were OK but we found that we had to bring our own fresh fruit - unless you like kiwi fruit and apples! Rooms nice, well maintained and functional.
This is a good hotel, but should not be overhyped as some of the other reviews have made it out to be. Having said that, Evora is indeed a special place and well worth a visit. Walk in towards the centre (from the alley opposite the hotel) and you will see two delightful 'local' restaurants on the LHS. Can't remember the names, but when you are dining with the locals, you know you are getting the best! Try the fish soup.

This hotel is very well located right against the old city walls so you can walk to all the historic sites. Our room was spacious and clean, as was the bathroom. The dinner we had in the hotel restaurant was good and breakfasts were varied and well presented. The hotel caters to groups so that makes it a bit hectic sometimes. The pool area is well kept, located in a nice green area--perfect for lounging about. I recommend the hotel for young singles, mature travellers and families with kids.
