My girlfriend and I were in Madrid from 28.12.2007 to 02.01.2008.
The Gran Atlanta hotel is located in a nice and quiet neighborhood, but it is an old hotel that needs to be refurbished. I think the hotel is overvalued, expensive for the level of comfort and more like 3 star hotel because even a restaurant is not available!
From airport you need about 30 minutes by metro till Nuevos ministerios metro station (direct line) and then you have to walk about 15 minutes till you reach the hotel. From the hotel the nearest metro station is Alvarado (10 min. walking) and this is direct line to Sol station; you need about 20 min. by metro to Sol station. The location it’s a little bit far from downtown!
The personnel was friendly and helpful. The room was basic, large and clean with old furniture, but if you want to visit the city you won’t spend too much time in the room. For the breakfast we had always the same food, fresh but not diversified and without any vegetables (!) and they served us only oranges. Around the hotel you will find a lot of restaurants and El Corte Ingles shopping center.

Generally a nice hotel. Not far from Barajas airport so convenient for anyone with an early flight. The walls between the rooms are not at all sound-proof so it's easy to hear the tv or people talking in next room which is annoying. Expensive for the level of comfort and definately not 4 star. More like 3 star as no extra services such as fitness area or restaurant facilities are available.

Not a 4 Star by UK Standards

We stayed at the Gran Atlanta for two nights. I chose the hotel due to its close proximity to Madrid's football stadium. The location of the hotel is excellent. There are two metro stations within easy walking distance and the football stadium is a 5 minute stroll.
The hotel itself was quite dated although the reception and breakfast area were nicely decorated. The rooms, although spotlessly clean, were very dated.
The breakfast was fine - normal continental fare with the normal offering of juices, tea/coffee, scrambled egg, sausage, (spanish) bacon together with the standard 3 cereals, fruit, choice of croissants/bread rolls/sliced bread etc.
To summarise this hotel, I would say that it's absolutely perfect if, like us, the purpose of the visit is to watch football and not really too bothered about luxuries. It's also great if you're having a stag/hen do in Madrid. It's NOT recommended for a romantic weekend away in what you believe is a 4 star hotel.
Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely fine but FINE is as far as I'm willing to stretch in describing the hotel.
Good's: Clean/perfect location/10 minute metro ride to the centre/
breakfast/friendly staff and chamber maids.
Bad's: No tea and coffee facilities/cheap toiletries/rooms were dated/noisy if you're staying in a road facing room/paper thin walls.
Poor imitation of a 4star hotel

We just returned from a 3 night stay at the Gran Atlanta hotel and we were very disappointed with the hotel. We booked this last minute break with The Travel Department and it was cheap but it is still advertised as a four star hotel which it is does not deserve. This is a 3 star hotel at best. The hotel itself is very clean and the rooms are serviced and cleaned daily. But the hotel is very dated with none of the facilities we have come to expect with a four star. There is no restaurant and the staff are extremely unfriendly and unapproachable and never believe in smiling. The Travel Department rep was very helpful and friendly though. The hotel is a distance away from the city centre for a short break but it is well serviced by local transport. Bus and metro stations close by and a taxi rank outside which costs approx 10 euro into town. There are shops and restaurants close by. But i would not recommend this hotel to anyone of any age. I have booked a further summer holiday with this agent and i sincerely hope that it is much better quality than my first stay with them. Madrid itself is a beautiful city with loads to see and do.

We have just returned from a very pleasant stay in this hotel. The room was very clean, nicely furnished and well equipped with television, trouser press, hairdryer, minibar, etc. The staff were all helpful although a lot of them didn't speak much English. We had a problem with the bathroom light one morning and this was fixed while we had breakfast, Breakfast was included in our deal and was a buffet with plenty of choice. We found it very easy to get around as the Metro was near by and a tourist day ticket with unlimited travel in the centre of Madrid was only 4 euros. There were plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. We had read that the hotel was an expensive place to access the internet so we found a place just round the corner which charged 50 cents for 10 minutes and another 40 cents to print out our boarding passes for the flight home. Compared with what we were quoted for other hotels in Madrid we definitely found a bargain this time.
