We are stayin here now. This hotel is ok. room is ok. they are clean. The beds aren't very comfortable. This hotel used to be the econo lodge, but they built a new section that has been open since 2001. The lobby has a bad smell. The room was freezing upon check in. The internet service only works close to the front desk. I opted for this hotel versus the brentwood which is across the street, which is cheaper only for the pool and jacuzzi. What a mistake, since the pool is cold and the jacuzzi has too much chlorine in it. After 2 minutes in the jacuzzi my eyes were burning and I started itching. There are signs not to open the windows, which I was at first impressed with because I have stayed other places where they open the windows and you get cold, but if you don't open the windows here, your eyes will burn out of your head. You can actually smell the chlorine in the hall. Tomorrow we will be snowmobiling and I will be sore, my dilemma is should I brave the jacuzzi or suck it up to a bad decision in stay in the bath tub and soak? The water in the shower does get hot but the water in the sink in the room does not get hot, less than luke warm. Next time, if they get the snow to ride, I will try my luck at the baymont inn. This place has a gas station next door, which also has beer. one across the street, with subway in it. burger king is next to that. When I called for reservations they said the hotel was in downtown gaylord. It is not. As far as I know, baymont is in town and within walking distance within actual restaurants. Yes when I take a trip it is for all the amenities including good food since I am driving the distance (9 hours to get here, the U.P. IS 12) and this is one of my vacations. Chalk it up to experience. :)
My ratings for this hotel are:

We stayed at the Econo Lodge on July 2, 2005. Very friendly clerk at check in, she had given us a free upgrade to queen beds from doubles, but moved us to the new section which had interior corridors. Since we wanted the exterior corridor to park right outside the door, we declined that upgrade but were changed to non-smoking at our request.
The building with the exterior corridors definitely needed some work! We had wallpaper peeling from the walls, about an 8 inch section between the bed and the window. Also the upholstery on the chairs was dirty and the building itself was generally run-down looking. We might have been better off in the newer building with the interior corridors.
Hot tub was lukewarm at best with anemic jets. Disappointing.
Continental breakfast the next morning was a disappointment overall. I was able to get a danish and bagel with orange juice but as I sat in the lobby eating, the food was gone (at about 8:15 a.m.) except for a bagel which a maid ate. (Know she was a maid because she had previously been behind the counter talking to the clerk who was telling her what rooms she had to clean that day.) The clerk came out and refilled the OJ carafe at a customer's request but I never saw more food come out.
A Good Value

We went up North for skiing at Boyne Mountain and didn't want to spend money on their exorbitant lodging. I booked the Econolodge in Gaylord for only $45/nt. on the weekend and the savings basically bought our two lift tickets at Boyne and then some.
In the winter this is most decidedly a snowmobiler's hotel as they allow parking of trailers and snowmobiles right on the property. So as one might expect there was alot of noise both from engines revving but also from drunken snowmobilers traipsing down the hall. However, after a day of skiing I as too beat to even hear it.
The room was clean and functional. No shampoo..only a bar of soap. It was definitely one of the warmest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. When we got there the heat was cranked up to the max and it felt like walking into a dry sauna. Didn't swim in the pool but it looked somewhat clean but small.
Overall, if your looking for a clean place to stay on the cheap, you can't beat this place!

Room was freezing when we checked in. Then heat could not be adjusted. I had to take a walk around 5:30 a.m. just to kick-start my breathing again. Room was just too hot. Finally, opened the door to cool it off.
