On check-in we were told there was no non-smoking rooms available, and there was also no king, or queen bedded rooms (both details which had been confirmed in writing by the travel agent) After a stoic stance by self, the duty manager appeared and moved us to a "suite" ( from which the ashtrays were hastily removed :-}) The room was spacious, with a superb bathroom, and it overlooked the main street and the river. Except that in the last 10 or so years so many taller buildings have been built that there's no way at all you'll ever see the river. And even if you could , it's just a tributary not the main river. Despite it being touted as "a few minutes" from the Bund and Nanjing Street; it was 15 minutes by taxi to either the Bund or the Nanjing Street shopping area. Staff were very helpful, apart from check-in experience, and better English than most hotels we experienced in China.

Decent location, clean hotel. But there is better. We had some difficulty communicating in English with most of the staff, and the beds are very, very firm. Also the hotel has busy, private party rooms on the second floor open to the lobby which are mostly used by locals, the noise from the comings and goings was very loud and many of them hung around in the lobby continuing their festivities...everynight.

We stayed at the Golden Riverview hotel for six nights in September. The hotel is quite nice as it is only about a year old. We booked our hotel through a tour package, so I can't comment on how reasonable the price is. The hotel is about an hour away from Pudong airport. The lobby and rooms are quite nice and spotlessly clean. We had a room with two double beds and it was a generous size, including a desk and two armchairs and a small table. The bathroom was an average size. No problems with housekeeping: towels and bedsheets were changed daily. Amenities, including toothbrushes, were replenished daily. There was a mini bar in the room, which we used to keep water and beverages cold that we purchased outside. The only complaint that I had was that the location was a bit sketchy. It's about a 10 minute walk to a main street with a department store and restaurants, but the actual street that the hotel is on is run down and old. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking around after dark in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Taxis are plentiful and quite cheap. It took about 15 min to get to the Shanghai museum, Jin Mao Building, and Yu Yuan Garden and costs approx 20 RMB. If I were to return to Shanghai, I would probably stay in another location, however I didn't have any problems with this hotel itself, other than the neighbourhood.
