The Solis is a brilliantly-located hotel, right in the heart of the Forum/Colosseum area near plenty of restaurants and bars. Our room was tiny, just enough room to walk around the bed, but it was a very comfortable bed and the room was clean and well sound-proofed once the windows were closed. There is no storage space other than a wardrobe (no drawers) and no chair, and the TV choice of channels didn’t include any English ones (sorry, our Italian is not that good), but we really didn’t spend a lot of time there other than to sleep. The hotel’s entry on Expedia is very impressive, the reality perhaps a little less polished – yes, there is a shower, but it didn’t stay in the rest, soaking the bathroom on one occasion. There are complimentary slippers (one pair) and toiletries (one set, not replenished). The bathroom phone must be the bigger rooms, we didn’t get that, nor the bidet. The staff are friendly and helpful, although we did arrive a little later than usual down to breakfast one day and had to swipe some uneaten croissants from another table as we obviously weren’t going to be provided with anything fresh. Continental only, but certainly enough to get us through the day. We’d go there again but if you want something fancy or are going to spend some time in your hotel, try somewhere else.

Arrived at hotel, thought it was in a great location! My husband and I and our two teenage daughters go up to our quad room. As soon as we open door a horrible sewer smell over takes us.
Try to call the front desk only to find out the phones don't work.
The room has a cot and a chair pullout to make up for the two extra beds. We told the front desk multiple times during our 4 day stay about the phone and smell, they said they would tell the owner. Nothing!!! We were told the smell was normal because it is an old building. We went past other rooms with there door opened and no smell!
We kept the bathroom door closed and window opened most of the time. Even after we left, my husbands leather coat still smelled like the room! YUCK!
It was a very busy holiday then, otherwise we would of moved to a different hotel. The breakfast was simple but nice.
The only good thing I can really say is that the Location was great! Next time I think I would try and stay at the Hotel Forum or another Hotel nearby.
If you are to stay here, do not get a quad room!

Great location for exploring Rome on foot

My friend and I chose the Hotel Solis because of it's location, which was wonderful. During our 10-day stay in Rome, we walked almost everywhere from the Solis -- the forum, Coloseum, Piazza Venezia, and St. Peter in Chains were minutes away. Only the Vatican, Spanish Steps and Termini areas were what we considered to be longer walks (a few miles), and the Villa Borghese on the north edge of town was a cab ride away. There were a few places on our street to buy groceries, which we put in the mini bar in our room. Almost all of the staff were very friendly. One young staff member even helped us open a bottle of wine from Frascati after we messed up the cork. The rooms at the Solis were small (we had a room with two twin beds that might as well have been one double bed), but we didn't spend much time there. The biggest drawbacks to the Solis were that the beds were very hard, the room cleaning was inconsistent and the breakfast room was small -- sometimes it was not possible to get a table and we would take a few pastries to go. That said, we much preferred staying at the Solis because of its location to staying in another area of Rome, such as near Termini or the Vatican.
Excellent Hotel!!

After reading the reviews prior to us booking we were not sure what to expect....We were very happy with this hotel. The reception staff were excellent, very chatty and more than willing to help, so the rude lady (mentioned in other reviews) was nowhere to be seen!!! We were there for a week so she has probably been fired! Yes, our room was small, but very clean and had no problem with the decore!!! Some of the other rooms looked quite large. If you are after a hotel about 500metres from the colosseum with excellent choice of restaurants in the street and only 10-15 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain, then you wont do much better than this one. Free internet was a bonus! We also walked all the way to the Vatican from the hotel, didnt die from it either!
