The hotel rooms are great and the food very good but the location was poor (junction of two busy roads and therefore very noisy) and the service very poor. It is an expensive hotel but there are not enough staff.

Stayed for 4 nights, just after Easter. A couple of points to mention - first, although there are lots of references to the Van der Valk Hotel, that is the name of the group that owns it and the hotel is known locally (and signed as) the "Leiden Hotel", or after the attached restaurant which has a rather complex Dutch name (Det Haagse Schoulwweg, or similar!!!).
Some comments suggest that the hotel needs refurbishing - we must have had a refurbished room as there was nothing about it that you could criticise - spacious, comfortable, clean and well decorated. The bed, though was a double base with two single mattereses and single duvets. The bathroom was similarly clean and spacious.
The restaurant is popular with the locals, but a bit average in quality, we thought. Breakfast is a buffet - again OK, but nothing special. The staff are all friendly and in keeping with the norm in Holland, all speak perfect English.
The hotel is a bit out of the town, but there is a reliable and frequent bus from outside and at 1.20 Euro for a single trip, is cheaper than parking the car in Leiden for an hour. We used it as a base to visit Keukenhof, Delft, Leiden itself, Gouda and Amsterdam and it is somewhere that I'd go back to without any doubt.
The final part of the redevelopement was being completed as we left - with a couple of weeks that should be finished and the builders gone. That will then leave the reception, restauarant and accommodation building as a single connected unit.

Booked this hotel for 2 nights as I had visited Leiden before and fancied accomodation there as well. When we arrived we discovered the Hotel is situated quite far out of the town and we had to pay from 12-17 Euro each time I needed a taxi to the central Station. The bus was only 1.20 euro, but only came twice per hour.
The receptionist was unhelpful and not very friendly
The Hotel itself is currently having an extension built, work starrts at 8am so there is no danger of missing breakfast. I ordered a delux room, which looked decidedly shabby. The carpet was stained, the blinds dirty and the bed cover ripped, it was very dark and both my wife and I suffered flea bites. There was a mini bar - just nothing inside it whatsoever.
On a plus point the jacuzzi was excellent,
