We stayed at the Tulip Inn for 2 nights. The rooms were very clean and decor very nice. The beds were not that comfortable but ok if you are not staying long. The hotel is kept very clean and the staff ok look out for Basil Fawlty at the evening meal. Although we did not have an evening meal there were some complaints about Basil. Apparently he is well known for his manner but is held in high regard in the local area and in the hotel. Just don't take any notice of what he says and its fine according to the others in our party. The hotel is in a good location and the metro and trams run regularly into the city. Very cheap. The lounge area is not that comfortable to sit for ages but ok for a quick drink at the bar.

Stayed in the Hotel Tulip Budapest for 2 nights in May 2008. The rooms are fine, though the beds are low. Shower facility fine, though no shower gel provided. Plenty of wardrobe space.
The hotel fronts the main road to town so is constantly noisy with traffic. From the 3rd floor you can see right into the Ferencvaros football stadium opposite (though it is dilapidated).
The lobby is fine, with a bar and friendly staff.
City centre is 5 stops away on the metro (which is grubby though reliable).
Breakfast is good in terms of quality of food but on the 2 days we were there the staff were overrun and the breakfast room overcowded. In fact we had breakfast in the lobby one morning.
Checking out was comical, one member of staff and at least 2 bus trips checking out simultaneously. Most people were just throwing their keys in (presumably they had nothing to pay).
Overall, OK, would probably stay there again.

I stayed at the Tulip Inn for 3 nights in September 2007, and found it to be a fairly pleasant experience.
We all have our expectations and biases, but to be fair, any review should take into account the conditions in that country and the money paid: I find this hotel to be fair value for Budapest - I've stayed at far worst hotels for triple the price in supposedly tourist-accustomed Italy!
The hotel is located exactly in between the Nagyvarad and Nepliget subway stations. The area may look seedy and deserted if you're used to central London or Manhattan, but this is par for Budapest, where you still see 1960s cars running on the street in all their faded glory. Plus: if you use the Airport Minibus shuttle service, this will probably be the first drop-off and last pick-up point, so you save some time. Plus: you can walk to the bus terminal in Nepliget, where most of the out-of-town and international buses leave. Possibly minus: the hotel is just 300 meters away from the subway station, but Nagyvarad is 5 stops to downtown Deak Ferenc ter, which may seem like a long 15 minutes if you're in a hurry to get home after a long day.
Rooms: I booked a single, but was fortunate enough to be given a twin in the quiet side of the hotel. The room was large by European (and even American) hotel standards. The furniture, as has been mentioned, is particle-board Ikea; but hey, so are those in a lot of hotel/motel chains in the US. To be fair, the mattress could be better. People used to thick mattresses will feel the springs - though I didn't have any problems. I don't remember the pillows, so it shouldn't have been a problem. The room had a small ref-minibar and cable TV with CNN, BBC and other EU channels. The shower (no tub) was OK, with adequately strong water.
The breakfast buffet was ample: hot food like scrambled eggs, sausages & French toast, hams and cheeses, a salad bar, different types of bread, fruit, cereals, yoghurt, juice, tea, coffee. Service is OK, but may sometimes be uneven (most likely due to inexperience with the "capitalist" service industry) - contrary to some complaints about tables left uncleared, the waiting staff was actually taking away all my unfinished plates the moment I stood up to replenish my drink at the buffet. The dining room was adequately sized, though it may get crowded if a big tour group on a tight morning schedule swarms in while you're there.
The front desk staff was courteous and helpful.
To summarize: I didn't pay an arm & a leg, so I don't expect anything close to the Ritz, and neither should anyone else. Given that this is Budapest, this hotel compares favorably to standard US roadside chain hotels. Though I may be tempted to stay closer to the downtown if I find something of the same price & quality, I would be happy to stay here again.

Stayed here two nights as part of a coach tour of central Europe. I wouldn't recommend it. The food, both dinner and breakfasts, were not pleasant experiences. The hotel is located on a main, noisy thoroughfare in a seedy part of town, although probably no more seedy than the rest of Budapest. There did not seem to be shops or eateries in the vicinity as an alternative. While the rooms were thankfully air-conditioned & reasonably sized, the beds, pillows, linen etc were extremely uncomfortable. If you sat on the end of the bed, you quickly found yourself on the floor! I'm sure you could do better than this hotel for the same price.MS
