I found the Golden Tulip in Accra to be a breath of fresh air after suffering almost a week in the Sheraton in Abuja.
Everything about this hotel is more than adequate. I honestly had no complaints. The room itself was nothing fancy, but it was spotlessly clean and very well maintained. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was large, modern and pristine.
The public areas of the hotel are quite busy, but its not an unpleasant atmosphere. People just seem to be moving about quite a bit. The area was pleasant inside, as well as poolside. The restaurant had a decent buffet that changed theme every night, or you could order A la carte which had a good selection.
The pool itself I didn't use but it looked very nice, and was certainly clean. There are also tennis courts and a gym, but I didn't use these facilities.
I did venture into the casino and played a bit of poker with some local ex-pats. The casino is small but pleasant enough. Might not be a non-smoker's cup of tea though.
The location is also pretty good. I was there on business but it seemed to be reasonably central and it was very close to the airport. I took a taxi down to the beach on the sunday and it only cost equivalent of $4 each way.
Wireless Internet was very good quality, but was perhaps a little expensive. There is however a business center with many computers where you can pay to surf the net - much like an internet cafe.
Overall, this is definitely a hotel that I would have no hesitation returning to. Very good value for money.

I have stayed here on numerous occassions th first being in 1991, just after it opened. The last time I stayed here was November 2007, and I wasn't very impressed then. Thinking it might just be me being picky I decided to give it another go.
It didnt start well, I had to wait 20 minutes for the hotel shuttle to turn up and considering that the hotel is only 10 minutes away.....
Last time it didn't turn up at all and after calling the hotel 3 times I took a taxi.
Generally the staff are very nice and helpful, but there are too many that are ignorant to the point of being rude, the forex bureau, room service, Business centre to name a few. The latter of which needs seriously updating, it's so slow it cost $12 to download 2 A4 word documents.
The minibar is sometimes not replenished and then on the 2nd day you are charged again for consuming something that wasn't there to start with !!
Half of what is advertised on the roomservice menu is not available at all and some only at certain times.
The rooms are not bad although they could do with redecorating, and the TV has no movie channels, even though it is advertised as having them.
They also advertise a nightclub. This hasn't been there for a few years.
During the 8 days I was there, I never saw the pool being cleaned. Also, considering the time of year there didnt appear to be any sort of mosquito control. I left with over 50 bites and I had to treat my own room, and when I did, one of the housemaids complained about the smell.
The last and most noticeable thing is the amount of Prostitutes that sit around the bars and pool in the evening. Its not possible to have a beer or meal on your own without being approached and after the 5th or 6th time this becomes very waring.
Nowadays there are a number of hotels equal to or better than the Tulip so I will be trying those instead, even if it means paying a few dollars more.

I spent one night in this hotel in April 4th, 2008. The service was great during the check-in and check-out processes.
Once in my room, I was a little bit disappointed because of old and faded carpet. The carpet itself is not dirty but colors are extremely faded. This part of the hotel first floor really needs some renovation. In my room, the bathroom was clean. On the other hand, the bay window that let you to the balcony could not closed, I had to call the front desk because someone could just override the balcony and access my room. Always check that your bay window closes properly for your safety.
Hotel welcome book was outdated and very old. It stated that there is a night club in this hotel that was true in the past but not nowadays. Continental breakfast was nicely presented with enough food variety. Wifi was also inaccessible. Shuttle bus to the airport was a nice plus to get to the airport.

A wonderful setting, even if you aren't able to stay here, we'd recommend you spend an evening listening to the live music performed each evening by the pool and enjoy the grounds.
Rooms are serviceable and we felt of international standards.
The food is generally good although service isn't the fastest, but breakfast was by fast the best we found - a great variety of dishes available.
The free bus that runs to the airport is available by request and we found this very convienient.

We traveled to Accra in June 2006 and stayed in three different rooms in the Golden Tulip since we made side trips to northern Ghana and over to Lome, Togo as well. We were disappointed in the first room because the air conditioning didn't work and we were tired after a long flight from JFK. We were upgraded to a suite when we returned from northern Ghana because there were no standard rooms available. The suite was quite nice. After returning from Togo, we had a standard room and the air conditioning worked just fine.
The Golden Tulip is a large, rambling hotel. We liked the restaurant very much and appreciated both the variety of food served and the quality of the service. I especially appreciated the breakfast buffet with lots of great options.
The business center made it possible for us to stay in touch with our kids back home, etc.
My one complaint (aside from the AC not working in the first room) is that the hotel failed to deliver a message from my husband (saying that his flight from Ivory Coast was delayed) until many hours later - after he finally arrived. Fortunately, someone at the business center was kind enough to call the airport and check on the flight for me.
I cannot compare this hotel with any others in Ghana but would be happy to stay there again.
