Based on the many excellent reviews, my husband and I booked this hotel for the last 3 nights of our Italian holiday. I have to say that the service was terrible and the food was even worse. They can't even manage decent capuccino or coffee and this is ITALY! I have lived in Euope as an American transplant for 6 years and have traveled extensively in many European countries. This hotel has been crossed from my list forever. The location IS stunning and the balconies over the lake are beautiful, so if you expect nothing from the staff and are happy with over-priced and poor quality food.. by all means this is the place!

We arrived in the middle of the night and awoke to amazing views over the lake to the Alps. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The lake side room 412 was excellent with clean bedding and towels every day. In the evening, as we were at dinner, the beds were turned down and chocolates were left for us on the bed - a nice touch. The food was good value with a different 4 course menu every evening. The service was excellent, in fact too quick! -no sooner had you finished one course as the next was brought! The hotel was quiet, apart from the increasingly jovial Page and Moye guests at dinner. The pool and sun area was good. The sun left the little beach area in early afternoon, so you need to get down early if you want to listen to the lake as you relax on the numerous sun loungers. There isn't much to do in Baveno, as opposed to Stresa, but that suited us. The boat trips on the lake are worth taking if only to visit the three islands, but if its only one, the Isla Pescatoire is the best with a lovely 9thc church. There is a train/boat trip over the Alps to Switerland for 28E with a full day's unlimited boat travel on the lake for an extra 6. Its worth the cost if only for the trip to Locarno and down the lake to Baveno. The only slight downside is we travelled with Crystal and they fly into Verona, about 3-4 hours coach journey away (with a 20 min stop) - some parts of the journey are enjoyable especailly on the 40 minutes travelling up the side of the lake, but its a bit tedious. We'd definitely stay again, just for the peace, quiet and wonderful views.

j'ai séjourné dans cette hotel 1 semaine en juillet 2007, il est très bien situé, au bord du lac, les chambres sont rénovées et belles, le restaurant est vraiment très bien, une belle carte et il y a une très belle piscine, un bel espace forme tout neuf avec un beau jaccuzzi, tout est très bien entretenu. petit déjeuner très bien servi, du froid, du chaud, des fruits, etc... Service impeccable. Par exemple, l'après midi on peut déjeuner de petits plats à la terrasse de l'hôtel jusqu'à 17h. Le seul inconvénient, c'est qu'il faut savoir qu'il est situé aussi au bord de la route qui est assez bruyante. Au final, je le recommande car c'est un excellent rapport qualité-service-prix

Kann das Hotel Splendid sehr empfehlen. Wir haben uns sehr erholt. Der absolute Pluspunkt ist die Lage direkt am See. Wenn man ein Zimmer mit Seeblick gebucht hat, kann man sich sehr glücklich schätzen, die tolle Aussicht und auch die Ruhe. Nachts kann man bei weit geöffnetem Fenster schlafen. Prima ist auch der private Sandstrand. Ein betonierter Steg, der sich unterhalb der Wasseroberfläche befindet, erleichtert den Zugang zum See. Ansonsten ist der Boden sandig mit vereinzelten Steinen. Personal ist sehr freundlich. Das Essen im Speisesaal läuft sehr ruhig ab. Man wird immer sehr freundlich vom Oberkellner sowie den übrigen Kellnern begrüßt. Die 1. Vorspeise und der Nachtisch ist in Büffetform, ansonsten kann man unter 3 verschiedenen Speisen die 2. Vorspeise sowie das Hauptgericht auswählen, was dann am Tisch serviert wird. Leider sind die Getränke sehr teuer. Der billigste Wein € 16,--, ein Bier € 4,--, Cola € 3,50. Ein kleiner Nachteil ist außerdem, dass im Zimmer kein Kühlschrank vorhanden ist. Trotzdem würden wir jederzeit gerne wieder dieses Hotel besuchen.

I had a caviar experience (but paid potato chip prices!) at this sophisticated and elegant hotel. Most of tits business seems to come from high end cultural tours of aging Brits with lovely manners. So look for Internet bargains. My guess is they become available when tour companies give back rooms if bookings fall short. The impeccably attired Maitre D' is dignified but long-suffering. He looks pained at the hotel's fall from grace from its glorious past. No matter. The property is well maintained and boasts its own small beach. Here are some tips: 1) The first room you are shown should be considered an opening offer. At all costs, avoid the noisy rooms facing the road. I managed to get a small single room overlooking the pool, gardens, and a slice of the lake. it even had a balcony. 2) This is a great hotel for single, independent travelers. Staff is very helpful in arranging tours, or travel on your own by ferry. 3) Take advantage of the fitness room, sauna, and whirlpool. They are little used. Sunrise runs along the lakefront are glorious! 4) Book airport transfers through the hotel. It's about an hour from Malpensa. The cost is just ten Euros for a trip in a small but comfortable air-conditioned van with a few other passengers. The only downside is the times may not be convenient. Taxis cost a staggering 110 Euros. Train travel is more complicated. I arrived from Turin (with several connections) but had to walk almost 1 km. from the station because there were no taxis. 5) Avoid the dining room for dinner. The lavish buffet is really geared to the groups. At 35 Euros for independent travelers, it is overpriced. .You'll do better in town, just a few minutes walk away. I recommend the La Posta restaurant in the main square. Stick to the fresh lake fish, potatoes, salad, mineral water and the house wine -- and you can have a great meal for around $25 a person.
