I cannot believe some of these recent reviews are for the same hotel we stayed in!!! In my view the Hotel Borromeo was reasonably priced (for Rome!), clean, comfortable, in a fantastic location and perfect for a short city break.
Firstly it is on a very busy street but the rooms have shutters and a double window which blocks out ALL the street noise when shut. The buzz of the street, in my view, adds to the charm of the hotel. We loved peering out of our window and watching the world go by - it is right in the middle of the 'life' of the city - Rome is a capital city - expect noise!
Secondly it was 30 degrees when we were there - the air conditioning worked perfectly and we were more than comfortable in the day and night.
Thirdly the rooms are not massive but rooms in hotels in Europe never are unless you want to pay ?500 per night!! The rooms in the Borromeo were certainly bigger than I was expecting.
The staff were more than friendly and helpful and I know they appreciated my attempt at speaking Italian - however poor!!
To sum up, I think the Borromeo is a great find for a short city break, for the money we paid I was more than happy!

My wife and I decided to stay here for our 1st wedding anniversary and first time in Rome, the web site looked great, ignore it, it`s totally unlike anything you`ll see in the hotel. The fresh flowers that are shown everywhere don`t exist, you may see the plastic ones on the roof terrace that look like they`ve been pulled from the river Tiber. The breakfast room was not a nice well kept room, it was a dirty terrace on the roof that served brown tasteless water that was supposed to be coffee, orange squash not juice, stale bread, well sweated cooked meats that looked like they`d been there all night. Dirty utensills, plastic cups.Unironed dirty tablecloths with food remnants from previous days breakfast on them. The staff were picking at the breakfast ,but the tipping dish that was present, surely a joke. The room was very small and filthy, scuff marks all over the walls, it looked like a D.S.S. bed sit although the sheets were changed daily. The shower head was full of limescale so the water shot out in all directions, the toilet seat was cracked and pinched your bottom every time it was sat on. The glasses in the room were plastic, scratched and cloudy, disposable plastic cups in the bathroom. Smelled of smoke everywhere, as non smokers this was a big disapointment. I would be ashamed to take paying guests if this was my hotel. Little money was needed to change the circumstances in this hotel, a coat of paint in the rooms, basic maintenance in the bathrooms and a breakfast that didn`t seem like it had been put together for under one euro per person. The worst hotel we`ve ever stayed at!!

My wife and I wanted to show our kids Rome...We wanted 3 dbl rooms for 4 nts and ended up w centrally located Borromeo. Decent price level, central location and classic htl photos and we were sold. We expected 3 star quality, this was what we finally ended up with:
1. The hotels shuttle bus broke down and never picked us up after midnite arrival...
2.For the nite-cup, dirty glasses in minibar and bathroom
3. Wooden floor broken up and simply covered up by doormat.
4.Reading lights dangerously and loosely screwed (?) to wall
5. Safe did not work
6.Roomdoor lock not reliable, sometimes locked sometimes not.
7. Only some dirty towels changed.
8. All eggs cold at breakfast, and often green...
9. When something empty on buffet, not automatically replaced/filled up.
10. Juice served in the cheapest thin plastic cups.
11. Juice (?) more like colored water.
12. Butter/cheese not kept cold
13. Most breads more like sweet cakes, toast thin like paper and rolls dry...
14. Water hardly ran out of bathroom washbasin.
15. A/C of course more noice than results...
Having learned since years that breakfast in Italy can be quite good, and most hotels are run by smiling and friendly people, this was our first disaster. We strongly recommend another choice!! 3stars here, who sold them?

We arrived at the Hotel Borromeo in Rome at the end of a 12 day Eastern Mediterranean Cruise. We were immediately disappointed by the shabby lobby. We had to wait three hours for our rooms, with no where to sit but one wobbly settee. We were even more disappointed when we saw the tiny rooms. The rooms were hot, and stuffy. Some of us were one floor up from the busy street, and when we opened the window for air, we got fumes and noise. Those in our party who had inside rooms had to contend with construction noises from early in the morning. This we might have expected in the middle of Rome, but we didn't expect terrible mattresses, pillows flat and hard, and no where to sit in the rooms except wobbly straight back chairs......(if you were fortunate enough to have a chair in your room.) Some of the staff was very rude. We had a lousy breakfast with fake orange "punch", cold scrambled eggs, and cold cereal that was left out all night uncovered in bowls. The elevator was very dicey, and the winding stairs narrow, steep and scary, with a rope railing only on one small section. The place was shabby, in need of paint, and boarded up in places. The buzz of the "breakfast room" was how disappointed everyone was in the place. We will never stay there again, and we'll spread the word. It was much too expensive for what it was, a dive. There was only one of three men working there who was any help at all when we asked questions, I was so grateful for that one helpful person, that in spite of my disappointment in the place, I gave him a nice tip. It was obvious to us that the owners of the place have no regard for their customers.
