My husband stayed at the Hotel Moderne in a trip to Geneva a while ago. I suppose my standards must be lower than others who have reivewed it, because I didn't have any real problems with this hotel. The room was small but comfortable. Breakfast was great each morning. The beds were a little hard, but typical European hotel fashion. The bathroom was clean and had everything I needed.
The best part about this hotel is the location. You're only a few steps from the lake in one direction and the train station in the other. We were able to travel all over the place using this hotel room as our base. The tourist center is just around the corner. I highly recommend a trip there - they have all sorts of maps and suggestions for things to do. On a whim one day, we followed their maps to a town called St. Cergue and experienced what might possibley be the best day I've ever had in my life. Seriously. I look back and nearly cry at all the great things we saw and did that day.
The staff were more than helpful. They spoke perfect English and provided us with a map and recommendations for whatever we wanted. They had sewing kits and all sorts of other little things you might need.
This was a decent, tourist class hotel in the heart of Geneva. If you're looking for a good place to sleep, bathe, and eat breakfast, you can't go wrong here.

Location – The hotel is a few minutes walk down hill from the railway station & where the No10 bus from the airport drops you off. Right in the middle of commercial part of town a few minutes from the lake and the bridge that that takes you over to the old town. In all a great location. BUT being in the middle of town does mean you are by busy roads – Rue De Bern is a side road off the main drags but being number ‘1’ does mean you are on the junction so be warned.
The building – About 50 years old – the hotel has five or six floors tall with a lift. You enter straight from the pavement – I do not think there are any private grounds with the building.
Reception & Public areas – Smart enough reception, a residents lounge with Internet is on the first floor as is the breakfast room. Beyond reception the d?cor is very tired – the hotels web sight does present the very best possible impression. That said for around ?100 per room per night in Geneva one could forgive that lack of life cycle decoration.
The rooms – Be prepared – (unless you get the one shown on their web page that looks really nice and assuming the one we had was the norm) the room was not nice – decorated many years ago, the carpets you would not want to walk bear foot on, the bed was as hard as rock, the pillows shallow, the old TV was a tiny 12 inch portable, a old swivel office chair was a rather unusual feature of the room that is NOT air-conditioned. Be aware if you stay there in the summer & have to open the windows you will have an issue over the noise as others have reported. The light on the desk did not wok – but there was a well stocked mini bar, which was handy for storing our water & chocolate.
The bathroom – a bit of a shock at first – but plenty of hot water, clean towels (daily), provided soap, the shower was clean – so whilst I would not want to linger it was OK for a couple of nights.
Food – The breakfast was a simple continental buffet affair – limited choice with cheese, meat, and cereal, fruit salad, tea, and coffee, orange concentrate.
Staff – All really friendly – your ‘free’ travel card is issued on arrival & is worth a fair bit given that each bus journey is 3SF & you can use the cards on the yellow lake boats as well.
Over all – End of the day you get what you pay for – the hotel is a budget one and needs decorating, has no air-con, accommodation is basic, but it is right in the centre of town, there is plenty of hot water, clean linen, local travel included – if you are using it JUST for somewhere to sleep and to have a simple breakfast & it is NOT summer then it should be OK for a night or two – so if you are going to the Motor Show in March it could suit you. Also try the Ibis & the Admiral Hotel – but many block book with companies so you take your chance.
Tip – Take a travel pillow, ear plugs & some flip-flops. Oh try the Petit Chalet restaurant (closed Mondays) just along the street for dinner – good honest food served in an interesting environment.

The only reason to stay in this hotel is to save a few Francs... don't expect much else, like clean linens. The hotel is located 3 mins walk from the bus/train station which also makes it extremely convenient. It is also walking distance to the old town, lake and the red right district.
I stayed one night in the economy room- twin bed and shared shower/bathroom on the top floor. The room was clean but the blankets and bed spread had obviously not been washed in a long time. I was actually sick to my stomach when I noticed how filthy the blankets were in the morning; it was too late for me but now you know!
The shower is also in poor shape... definitely bring your flip flops to avoid picking up whatever germs it has to share.
The reception is friendly and open 24 hrs for late arrivals. I asked for an early morning wakeup call and surprisingly received it on time. Breakfast is very simple, extremely basic even by Swiss standards.
So what to expect... a simple accommodatin with filthy bed linens and a gross shower that is walking distance to the train station and attractions for a few less Francs than you'll pay elsewhere.

the location is the only thing going for this hotel. i do not know how this hotel received a 3 star rating. It is all very badly insulated, therefore extremely noisy. The rooms are in dire need of attention with the furnishings being very old and dirty. there is no comfort or cosiness associated with any part of the hotel. The breakfast was ordinary - stale croissants in Switzerland! backpackers would be more comfortable than this hotel. Only stay here if you have too much money to spend on very basic features, and are a heavy sleeper.

I had a room that was supposed to be good enough for 4 adults, but the room we actually got was just about adequate for 2 adults and a child. It was small, extremely noisy and ill maintained. The service also was nothing worth talking about. Overall, it was a waste of money. I would not recommend it to anyone even by mistake! I think the hotel took away a lot from the fun we had in Geneva... very disappointing indeed.
