Il faro is a very old fashioned hotel, could do with a makeover the food isn't great either meals are very poor and in the morning a bread roll yummy no cold meats or anything, water they serve at dinner is tap water, to get the sorrento town there is about 104 steps. The air conditioning was hanging off the wall, Non of the funiture in the room matches we had a red camp bed and two leather beds, Random?, The wardrobe in the room was smelt very musty so unpacking wasn't a problem, the bathroom the shower only went freezing cold or boiling hot so cold showers all week, reception staff we're polite and nice but the restuarant staff we're miserable and stressy. But sorrento town itself is beautiful and so is Italy. Chow:)

My wife and I booked through a travel agent Hotel Il Faro,.
When we arrived they did not have our booking even though we had confirmation.
They gave us a room for 160euros p/n which was dark and dingy, had a small bathroom that was not very clean.
The room had a loft and was described as a triple. we were being charged for a double. We asked for another room which they gave us on the 4 floor the only thing good about this room was the view of the habour; and thats all.
They charged us 150euros for this room. When we checked the room rate on the back of the room door it was posted as 130euros, on the internet we were quoted 115euros for a double room.
They made their money from us but as we were ment to be there 2 nights we found another hotel in Sorronto for half the price and in the city centre.
The hotel is located 50 or so metres from the habour which is very noisy during the day.
The hotel also has its own resturant at the hotel entrance, so if you want to go out you have to pass the front door of the resturant where the manager or wait staff insist you eat there.
You cant gain access to the hotel any other way.
At night the resturant is also very noisy so if you want some sleep wait until after midnight, then the harbour stars at 5.30am.
The acces to the main city centre is by bus or by walking up stairs 152 to be precise, thats after a 5 minute uphill walk to the stairs, not for the faint hearted.
The breakfast was served up to you not buffet as in most hotels and the food didnt look fresh.
I like to see and choose what I eat and so we left had berakfast at our second choice hotel
I am not being fussy but they seem to advertise as a 3 star hotel.
We have stayed in many 3 star hotels in Italy through May 08 and Il Faro is at best 11/2 stars, it does not meet the 2 star standard that is availabe in other hotels.
If you like a noisey unclean hotel that you need to have walking and climbing boots for, then this is for you.Remember 152 steps.
If you want honest and courtious service there is plenty hotels more convienently located in Sorrento

After spending a wonderful two weeks touring around italy i was waiting for the bubble to burst.
Hotel Il Faro certainly took care of that. Oh my god it was the worst hotel we stayed in for our entire holiday.
Firstly we were advised by our travel agent that we would have no parking costs. Wrong...$20 euro / night was the going rate. We were than advised by a very smug gentleman at reception that there is no free parking in Sorrento. Well i can tell you that set the tone for the rest of the stayl
We stayed on the 4th floor in a harbour view room, it was very noisey, however i was perpared for that. The bathroom. Well that's a whole other story. It was the worst i have ever seen, even for a hotel. The shower was barely big enough for one person. Revolting. The beds nearly folded in half when you laid on them. Sheets were filled with rips and holes. There was no bar fridge and the hotel does not even have an iron.
Breakfast, well that was an interesting experience. Don't expect it to get you through until lunch. Unless you are in a tour group it's an effort for them to serve you.
this hotel really put a downer on the remainder of the holiday. If we hadn't already paid for the stay i would of definately of moved on...do yourself a favour DON'T BOTHER !!!!!

Having spent two weeks touring Italy, staying in 5 different hotels this was quite the worst hotel I have ever come across anywhere, ever! Most Hotels have some redeeming feature, even when generally poor. The only redeeming feature of this hotel is that it is very convenient for the harbour.
The room was so small that I slept less than 6 feet from the WC. It was so noisy I only slept between Midnight and 5.30 am when the traffic was not rattling passed on the cobble stones outside.
Despite being virtually on the seafront the restaurant was fully enclosed and had no windows. Breakfast was what you were given, no choice and dinner was little better with a small choice but cold when the food arrived which usually involved a long wait!
Although a hotel, the bar was not open for drinks on a Monday evening and I was advised by reception to go to one of the bars elsewhere in the harbour area. Even had the bar been open it is in a tiny, enclosed and somewhat smelly courtyard.
My advice, stay elsewhere!
