Have just returned from a trip to the Hotel Montanus, we stayed in a garden room which, unfortunately looked nothing like photographs we had seen! As previously suggested a 4 star hotel with sleazy, orange 2 star rooms, not as clean as I find acceptable either. From the start, it felt like everything was done to "lift" as much extra money from us as possible, the steep price of 15 euros per day to park our car on site,in my opinion, over priced breakfast, likewise with the mini bar tarrif and then the threat of a 5 euro charge if we dared to lose the plastic key!!!
I wish I could have said something nice about the staff, but as a flight attendant, used to travelling every week, the reception staff here were amongst the most amazingly unfriendly and completely disinterested I have ever encountered.
Location was great and we loved Brugges, but suggest you keep looking if you think this is the answer to your accomodation needs.

Our third visit in 5 years but sadly the last. We have stayed in the main hotel in the past but only Garden Rooms were available on our recent visit. Agree with a previous post that they were more akin to a 2 star motel room. Cheap furnishing, plasic bathroom fittings and a couple of loose sockets are not what is expected of a 4 star hotel. We were unable to get anywhere near the bar, there was a function that overspilled into the breakfast area - hence a smokey atmosphere the following morning. Food acceptable continental breakfast fare. I suspect there may have been a change of ownership of late.

This was my fourth trip to Bruges. Bruges is a beautiful town with a large number of interesting places to see and to stay in. Montanus is trying to be something a bit different in a city loaded with historic hotels, a hip chic hotel. This is fine, but they came up a bit short.
The Good:
The hotel has a nice boutique feel about it. The lobby and bar (both very small) were nice. The garden area was also very nice. The continental breakfast was OK, just average. The bed was comfortable, with clean crisp linens. The bathroom in the room was large and clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Here is where Montanus came up short...let me start with a big one…the rooms have no air conditioning. Keep that in mind if your visit is in the warm months. While the room (101) was a decent size, it was in desperate need of a renovation. The carpet was dirty and stained. There was a day bed (presumably for if there were more than two guests staying in the room) that had stains all over it. The sitting chair looked as though all manner of things had been spilled on it. Paint was peeling off the walls and ceiling. The maid did not clean our room one of the days.
The room was supposed to have wireless internet access, but about halfway through our eight day stay it stopped working. The hotel said they knew about it, but it was not going to be fixed until the following week. Not a good thing when you are on business and one of the reasons you stayed there is because they had wireless internet access.
One other thing...and this is more of an aesthetic comment...the furniture in the room just looked cheap. The hotel common areas are a nice space…not an elegant nice…more of a minimalist nice. But in the sleeping room it was a collection of cheap mismatched furniture.
I was speaking with one of the staff people one morning and they said the hotel knew they needed to renovate the sleeping rooms. If I heard that the Montanus had been renovated I would stay there again. But until that happens, there are a lot of other really nice places to stay in Bruges in the same price category.
