We stayed at hotel stein recently and were upgraded to a "junior suite" on the 5th floor, which turned out to be a very nice large room furnished with gorgeous antiques - I think they called it the Mozart suite. However it was a hot night (no a/c) so we had to keep the windows open. That created a huge problem because of the street noise which was unbearable!! The hotel's great view of the river and the old town is fabulous, but it is located right on the intersection of a busy street and one of the few bridges across the river; there were buses and noisy vehicles all night long. So it was a rather sleepless night, and if we had been staying a second night, we would have had to insist on a different room. Other than this problem, we loved the rooftop bar and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful (we didn't even bother mentioning the noise because we were leaving - maybe the "upgrade" was meant to placate us?). Breakfast was good and the location was excellent. We'd never stay here again in the summer!! Winter maybe.

First thing to consider is that this hotel is not air-conditioned. If it happens to be hot during your stay, and it was during ours, you will be miserable, and we were. Secondly, it seems no two rooms are alike and you are essentially at the mercy of the gods as to the kind of room you get. We were with a large group and the room my wife and I got was slightly larger than a prison cell. Others in the group were also unlucky, but others had very reasonably sized rooms. So be sure you have an understanding of what size room you will have upon arrival. My best advice, spend a bit more and find another (air-conditioned) hotel in Salzburg and take risk out of the equation.

This is not a four star hotel! The rooms are stuffy and bedding uncomfortable. Don't be fooled by a room with a view as the road outside is noisy all night. There was no form of ventelation in the bathroom so it was extremely stuffy and smelly. When we tried to make a complaint it fell on deaf ears. The management were completely unsympathetic.

Hotel Stein has the most incredible location, right on the river and facing the fort and opposite old town. We had a room with an incredible view and no experience of being disturbed by noise from the street (probably because we were on an upper level). Our friends had a twin room which was galley style and didn't have a view, but they had the most enormous bathroom I have ever seen in a hotel. I loved the quirkiness with buddha statues on one floor and an imitation Lempicka on ours - it added to the oddball atmosphere.
The staff were lovely and ever helpful, and the roof terrace was brilliant for afternoon cocktails and beers. Breakfast was a nice cold meats/cheeses deal but as mentioned in a previous review, there were cold eggs and a bit of a race for them.
The price of this hotel is outstanding for the location and service, and I definitely hope to stay there again.

Best hotel we stayed in during our trip to Europe - real value for money and staff were excellent.
The staff were the highlight of the hotel, they went above and beyond their call of duty in booking us our train tickets for our next journey. It turned out to be more difficult than expected, yet they didnt show any signs of irritation.
Rooms and services as expected of a four star hotel. Great views of Salzburg from the rooftop bar.
