Outside look nice, but the room is terrible

We stayed this hotel for one week during Easter 2008, based on internet search, the hotel building looks great, high on the mountains. However, they give us a tiny small room for our family 3 people. The room is smelling, very basic, tiny shower, no bath, only small sink in the room, very old style curtains, carpets, bed is small, uncomfortable, not clean, besides, there is no view from the room at all. But the price we paid is quite high, it's about UK?135 pounds per night, the hotel seems like 2 stars standard to me. The staff from hotel is also arrogant, not helpful, they do not speak good English, only German. The breakfast is terrible as well, so basic.
I would not recommend this hotel ( Terrace ) to anyone who wants to enjoy their holiday. It's a bad experience!!!
Spectacular Views!

While on a recent tour with Explorica Educational Travel to Lucerne, we were lucky enough to stay for two nights at this lovely property. Nestled in the majestic Alps, this hotel is so high up that you actually have to take a cable car to get to it! (Don't worry - they take your luggage up for you in a van.) The rooms were clean and spacious and every room had a small balcony with a beautiful view of the mountains! The included breakfast was delicious! I think that this hotel is a busier during ski season, but in the summer it was quiet and serene.

The hotel location is great. Good view and a fantastic terrace. You have to take a funicular down in to the village. If your carrying your skis and boots, it can be a hastle. Better to keep your skis in the depot at the lift.
Service is above average, even if the bar personal are a bit thick at times.
I would say that everythin is above or well above average, except the rooms, or rather the corridors that lead to the rooms. Post-communism is a good description. And the rooms are heavily perfumed to take away the smell of yonkers of years of smoking.
Oh yeah, they smoke inside. Disgusting...

We arrived by car on Christmas eve, and the friendly multilingual staff were extremely helpful in explaining the items included in our all inclusive plan. The Hotel is on a hill, with a splendid view of the town of Engleberg below, and of the Alps, a great view from all main windows. The rooms are compact, but very clean, modern, and simple. The tram is a few steps away,at the top of a steep hill, and allows quick access to the town, and the shuttle to the mountain by a 4 min bus ride (free). The main rooms are grand, with high celings, and a slightly faded glory, but still elegant with a view that can't be beat. The all inclusive plan had a buffet breakfast, with superb breads, croissants, rolls, eggs, cereal, fruit, yogurt, lunch vouchers for the self serve restaurants at the ski mountain, afternoon snack, and a large buffet dinner, including at least three main course choice and a cheese buffet each evening, with a salad bar, and great desserts. Meals were always very tasty, and choices varied.House wine, beer, water and soda included. This is a terrific value, when you see the outrageously high prices in the local restaurants, and even in the 2 grocery stores in town. There is a Wellness center, with a sauna with room for only 10, and a steam room, great after a long day on the slopes. After dinner there is usually a show, in German. If this is not to your taste, bring along your own entertainment (cards, board games), or play Fussball, pool, or darts in the bar. Very "kid Friendly". Beds are very comfy, with soft down pillows, down comforters, and crisp cotton sheets.
The staff is always very helpful. Good value for money, especially with regards to the food, which is superb! The hotel shows its age, the furniture may be simple, but the staff, views, and value for Switzerland are appreciated.

The hotel has an impressive fassade on distant pictures and must have been beautiful some seventy years ago, now it needs major investments to reach the faded splendor again. The parking beside the Hotel was strictly for employees only, the guests had to park 300yds further down. The washbasin was in the room, due to the small bathroom (toilet and shower). The room was small, the railings of the balkony were rusty and did not look safe. The common rooms were equipped with cheap furniture, the ashtrays cleaned on demand. Breakfast was simple. The view of the hotel is outstanding and with a lot of money the hotel can be as well. The free self-driving funiculare is unique and a very comfortable way to go downtown Engelberg.
The surrounding scenery is wonderful and worth a couple of days.
