Just returned from a stay at The Governor Hotel. We had a Parlor Suite and it was great. The windows opened to the street so we could feel the cool Portland air. The entire staff was professional and friendly. The con is that some of the non Parlor Suite rooms were very small but if you can upgrade to a Parlor Suite this hotel is great!

Had A Great Time

Came in from New York with our older kids (19, 24) and one of their friends (21) for a family wedding and stayed in two adjoining suites on the 6th floor. The rooms were big, clean and appointed very nicely.
We had some minor issues with certain things not working, and the staff was very quick to accomodate us. The young ladies at the front desk were extremely pleasant and helpful.
Great shopping was just blocks away and hotel personnel were extremely accomodating in giving directions and offering suggestions for places to eat breakfast, etc. Found some really nice off-the-beaten-track places for late breakfast and we were extremely lucky that the weather was so beautiful the entire time we were there so that walking around Portland was a pleasure.
Loved the Starbucks right off the lobby - would go down early am before everyone else got up and would get my coffee and read the paper - the kids loved it as well because they have to have their Starbucks fix every day.
Worked out in the clean and modern gym - I wish I had had more time to work out because I thought the gym was really nice.
Jakes Grill was an added pleasure - right in the hotel and it was a very relaxing place to have a late afternoon cocktail with my husband for some quiet time before our evening festivities with family, etc. Drinks were good and the food was great.
This was my 2nd trip to Portland and I absolutely enjoyed it so much. I found it to be a very cosmopolitan city and easy to navigate. People were friendly and all of us really enjoyed our stay and we all loved the Governor. We would not hesitate to return to this hotel.
Excellent location, very spacious room – good bar food

Beautiful old hotel with small rooms, no fridge, bathroom pretty basic, but clean upon arrival although housekeeping could have been better for second night. Halls are nice, carpet and other linens perfectly fine. Downstairs lobby is very pretty but not welcoming -- we usually try to "use" our hotels to get a real since of the place, but this one, although attractive, was just too vacuous. The best thing about this hotel is Jake's Grill downstairs -- which has an excellent bar, bartender, decor, service, happy hour (late night) food menu, etc. If you stay here, be sure to visit Jake's and check out the beautiful native American Indian murals in the lobby area. We split our stay in Portland into two stays of two nights each and moved for nights 3 & 4 to the Hotel Monaco which we highly preferred.

Our review is much different then the previous review. We had never stayed at the Governor and wanted a place in downtown Portland that we thought would be upscale. We were not disappointed. The location could not be better as it was within walking distance to some good retail shopping, and immediately out of the hotel was the free streetcar that would take us down to the waterfront area to see the Cirque Du Soleil that was in Portland during our visit.
We stayed at the hotel for two nights and although, we realized after seeing our room, it was in the older section, we were fine with the older decor. It was a nice sized corner room with a large gas fireplace. I hope the hotel will consider replacing the refridgerators as we missed having one for our waters etc. We enjoyed the bathrobes and especially liked the comfortable beds and higher end bedding.
If you ilke the historical features of the hotel you will be impressed with the Governor. We loved the ambiance, and foyer sitting area in the lobby were very impressive. The staff (and all that we encountered ) were polite, friendly and really made our visit enjoyable with all their attentions.
We did eat at Jakes, the hotel resturant, and thought it was excellent. Again the service was exceeding and food delicious. We would stay here again and would definitely reccommend to others for the historical features, location, and outstanding service.
