I am originally from Traverse City and visit several times a year. I have stayed at various hotels, etc. Up until late last summer and now this year, I have always enjoyed staying at the Fairfield since I am a Marriott member and travel often. However, beginning mid summer last year, it didn't seem to matter when I tried to make a reservation or for how many days, the Internet Web site would say no rooms available. However, if I called the hotel, sure enough there were rooms and some right up until the last minute. I think it should be easier to make reservations via the Internet as many of us make our travel arrangements on line. Although the prices of the rooms change dramatically during the summer, one should still be able to make reservations via the Internet and not have to call the hotel directly. There are other hotels in the area that seem to be doing the same thing, though. All in all, I found the staff very friendly, (prefer to eat breakfast at the Cracker Barrell next door) and rooms clean.

We've been visiting TC for about 5 years now, and have observed this hotel going downhill each time we visit. We typically stay at Marriott brands whenever possible, but this one is not up to the Marriott name. Not only in the cleanliness/upkeep, but also the lack of proper service. The management either doesn't notice, or doesn't really care.
Traverse City in general, is a beautiful, fun getaway, with great sights, culture, shopping, music and dining. Our future visits will be enjoyed at one of the other many lodging options.

I had to spend a week in the Traverse City area, and this is one of the few major brand hotels south of the city in the direction I needed to go.
First the pros - The staff was really great. They were always helpful and friendly, whether in the front desk or the breakfast area.
The breakfast itself was a pleasant surprise for an included continental breakfast. It was first rate. In addition to the usual cold cereals, fruit and breads, there were hard boiled eggs, fresh hot oatmeal (not the hot water sugar slop), and great make them yourself fresh waffles. The small frig had not only yogurt and stuff but some kind of prepack brand of egg sandwich which I didn't try. I'd say this was closer to full breakfast than continental.
They had a small indoor pool, but the glass enclosed area was frequently fogged in. I was a bit concerned to swim by myself if nobody could see in, so didn't try it.
The room I had was spacious - a king size bed, a full couch sitting area that could open into a bed, and a nice desk and chair. Free internet is wired at the desk (although you might be able to pick up wireless from the lobby). There was a problem with the internet service one night, but they did get it fixed and it worked fine the other days. The room was not exactly fancy (the microwave was perched on top of a small frig), but it was comfortable and had most of what I needed.
Cons - Somebody is really skimping on the quality of the towels and paper goods in the room. That gets uncomfortable after a few days. It's stupid to ruin the experience for a few pennies.
Elevator - there is one tiny elevator, with a frequent wait. I usually used the stairs (only three stories), but these were not too nice and placed in inconvenient spots.
Location - You really need a car to get anywhere, except maybe the Sam's Club next store and one nearby restaurant. It is near the Traverse City Mall, but Route 31 is a crazy road to walk (and I easily jaywalk in NYC) and even crazy to enter or exit by car from the wrong side.

This is a well-kept facility and everything was spotlessly clean. Nice breakfast in the morning included juice and waffles in addition to standard fare. The only problem was that the air conditioning unit blower cycles on and off with the compressor making it hard to sleep. Better units have an option to keep the fan running all the time so that noise is more constant.
